Jamey Charles is a 21-year-old karate instructor at the Chatty community centre in Gqeberha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jamey has learnt to navigate not only the physical demands of martial arts, but also the emotional challenges that come with making a difference in\u00a0their\u00a0community. As a student, Jamey understands the importance of balancing\u00a0their\u00a0own education with\u00a0their\u00a0passion for teaching and mentoring others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a letter to the Express, Jamey said: “Despite my best efforts to focus on empowering young people and shaping future leaders, I’ve faced negativity and criticism from those who should be supporting me. Some have even resorted to spreading hatred and doubt, trying to undermine my work and discourage others from joining my dojo. It’s hurtful to be seen as competition rather than a fellow community member working towards a common goal.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, according to Jamey,”I’ve chosen not to let these challenges deter me. Instead, I’ve used them as fuel to drive my passion for making a positive impact. I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of karate in the lives of my students, and I’m committed to continuing my work, even in the face of adversity.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t
