The man that stabbed an off-duty police officer in the
\nback during a housebreaking incident in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), last week, will
\nappear in the local Magistrates Court again on Tuesday for a formal bail

An off-duty police officer was stabbed during a recent housebreaking incident in Bluewater Bay.<\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mangaliso Mzileni (30) was detained on a charge of
\nhousebreaking and attempted murder after he was allegedly caught red-handed when
\nhe broke into a house in Bluewater Bay and found with jewellery worth R10 000
\nin his possession by w\/o George \u201cFrikkie\u201d Vermaak and resident, Ray Marsh.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu,
\nVermaak was driving on the N2 at approximately 10:00 on the morning of
\nWednesday, February 24, when he received a frantic call from Marsh, his neighbour.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMarsh informed him that an unknown male had just
\nconfronted his wife. The said male had jumped over the boundary wall and
\nwas moving between Maureen Circle and Riverside Drive. Immediately w\/o Vermaak,
\nfrom the Nelson Mandela Bay Operational Command Centre, turned around and
\nheaded back to Bluewater Bay to assist his neighbour. The area was thoroughly
\nsearched but the suspect could not be found,\u201d Naidu explained.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/span>\u201cAt about 11:00, Marsh once again phoned Vermaak and
\ninformed him that he heard a woman screaming at the back of his house. Both
\nMarsh and w\/o Vermaak headed in the direction of the screams but could not find
\nanything.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs he was standing in a yard in Riverside Road, he heard
\na noise in the garage and peeped inside. He saw a man trying to jump through
\nthe window. The clothing description matched the description given to him
\nin the morning,\u201d Naidu added.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the suspect climbed through the window, Vermaak
\ntackled him and during the scuffle, he felt a hot sensation in his back \u2013 he
\nwas stabbed. The suspect managed to break free and ran straight into Marsh.
\nBoth Marsh and Vermaak grappled with the suspect again and after some time,
\nthey managed to get the knife from him. When a private security officer
\narrived, the suspect was handcuffed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naidu said it was confirmed that the suspect had broken
\ninto a house in Riverside Road. \u201cJewellery to the approximate value of
\nR10 000 was found in his possession. W\/o Vermaak received 12 stitches on
\nhis back,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brig. Thandiswa
\nKupiso, commended both Vermaak and Marsh for their brave actions and response
\nto the situation. \u201cTraits such as integrity and bravery are what make a police official earn the
\ntrust and confidence of the communities. The actions of both men are
\ncommendable as they risked their lives to make sure that the criminal was
\napprehended.  Execution of their daily tasks with service excellence is
\nwhat contributes to professional policing,\u201d Kupiso added.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
