The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, recently handed 14 chess tables to the community of Paarl and the greater Drakenstein Municipality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Groenheuwel Library received seven of these chess tables which were made by Correctional Services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This handover that provides access to the game of chess, forms part of the department\u2019s goal to encourage each library in the Western Cape to contribute to mass participation, talent identification and positive youth development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marais said the game of chess is not only a sporting activity to pass the time, but it also incorporates valuable life lessons. \u201cIt teaches us to have a plan, make a move and take personal responsibility for the move, and that each move has a consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that it teaches everyone that, no matter how the opponent tries to push one into a certain position, the decision is always ours to make. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
