\nvanjaar gaan veelvuldige Berg-wenner, Hank McGregor man-alleen die 240 km tussen Paarl en Velddrif aandurf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die rede
\nhiervoor \u2013 die Covid-19-pandemie het gekeer dat hierdie w\u00eareldbekende
\nkanomarathon kan plaasvind, en in sy plek het
\ndie organiseerders \u2019n virtuele kanomarathon tot stand gebring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar dit is
\nmet groot spyt dat kanovaarders nie die Berg vandeesweek kan aanpak nie, juis
\nomdat die rivier n\u00e1 goeie re\u00ebn reeds sterk vloei en nog re\u00ebn word vanaf
\nDonderdag verwag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die
\nvirtuele-marathon, Ultra Paddle, is w\u00eareldwyd baie goed ontvang met roeiers vanuit alle oorde wat ingeskryf het daarvoor. Die Ultra Paddle het reeds die vorige rekordinskrywing
\nvir die Berg-marathon oorskry, en tientalle word steeds verwag in die dae voor
\ndie  Ultra Paddle einde Julie eindig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roeiers die
\nw\u00eareld oor kan in vier dae die afstand van 240
\nkm voltooi om \u2019n goue sertifikaat te verdien, of as alternatief kan die afstand
\nvoor die einde van die maand voltooi word om \u2019n silwerertifikaat los te slaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2019n
\nBronssertifikaat kan verdien word deur 50 km of meer in die Ultra
\nPaddle-venster te voltooi. Hierdie is spesifiek gemik op die jeug en diegene
\nnuut aan die sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brandon
\nMacleod, \u2019n organiseerder van die byeenkoms, s\u00ea die Berg gaan oor
\nlangafstand-roei. \u201cAlhoewel daar geen vergelyking is met die behoorlike
\nBerg-marathon met sy bome, kanale, uiterste weer en onvoorspelbare water nie,
\nis dit uit die reaksie op die Ultra Paddle-konsep duidelik dat daar groot
\naffiniteit en respek vir die Berg Marathon-uitdaging is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wanneer die
\nvenster Woensdagoggend oopgaan, sal Suid-Afrikaanse roeiers op hul plaaslike
\noefenwaters regoor die w\u00eareld saamtrek om op hul uiteindelike mikpunt uit te
\nkom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Groepe van
\ngretige Berg-aanhangers sal op Thames in Londen, in Asturi\u00eb in Spanje, aan die
\nLake Okanagon in Kanada, in die waters van Kaliforni\u00eb, op die waterwe\u00eb in
\nIerland, Hong Kong en Australi\u00eb en in baie ander lande regoor die w\u00eareld roei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMeer as
\nenigiets is dit \u2019n ongelooflike teken van solidariteit,\u201d s\u00ea Macleod. \u201cDie
\nw\u00eareld is op die knie\u00eb gebring deur die koronavirus, maar hierdie nuwe
\nuitdaging het mense op so \u2019n positiewe manier bymekaar gebring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHierdeur
\nsamel ons ook geld in vir \u2019n voedselverligtingsprogram vir Kanovaart Suid-Afrika, wat \u2019n verdere mate van
\nbetekenis toevoeg tot elke inskrywing wat ontvang word en elke kilometer wat
\ngeroei word,\u201d het hy bygevoeg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woensdagoggend
\nsal elf keer Berg-kampioen McGregor uit die Paarl vertrek op \u2019n solo-reis op
\ndie Bergrivier hiervoor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit is
\nbedoel om die gees van die Berg lewendig te hou, en te bou aan belangstelling
\nin die 60ste bestaansjaar van die wedren in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
