Hoekom sou die Paarl Post<\/span> in \u2019n storie oor die afgestorwe Dawie de Villiers belangstel, het hierdie skrywer gewonder totdat hy onthou het dat De Villiers, wat verlede week op 81-jarige ouderdom oorlede is, sy vormingsjare as predikant op Wellington, buurdorp van die Paarl, gehad het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wellington was die veelsydige De Villiers se eerste en laaste gemeente voordat hy filosofie-lektor, diplomaat en later kabinetsminister geword het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sy debuut as studenteleraar op Wellington was blykbaar nie sonder \u2019n tikkie omstredenheid nie. Dawie, soos hy alom bekend was en omdat hy nie omgegee het dat mense hom so aanspreek nie, is daarheen beroep terwyl hy \u2019n ho\u00eb profiel as Springbok-rugbykaptein gehad het. Party van die ouderlinge het nie gedink dit is gepas dat Dawie Saterdagmiddae rugby speel en Sondag op die preekstoel moet staan nie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit was tog onvermydelik dat Dawie ook die Boland sou verteenwoordig en kaptein van di\u00e9 span sal wees wat onder meer party wedstryde in ander provinsies sal moet speel en sodoende dus nie sy taak Sondag sou kon vervul nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar uiteindelik het die Wellingtonners \u2019n plan gemaak. Dawie sou vir die dorp speel, sy werk doen, en ook die Boland en Suid-Afrika op die rugbyveld lei. Hy het glo een Sondag met \u2019n blouoog op die kansel verskyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My eie verbintenis met Dawie het in 1954 begin. Ons het in die middel van my eerste jaar as ho\u00ebrskoolleerder in Vanrhynsdorp na Bellville in die Kaap verhuis. Een van die eerste seuns wat ek in die Ho\u00ebrskool Bellville in my ouderdomsgroep ontmoet het, was Dawie \u2013 klein, blond en mal oor sport, soos ek. Sy ouers het in daardie stadium naby ons huurhuis gewoon. Sy pa, Coenie, ook klein van postuur, was \u2019n politikus van die NP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons het as kinders oor en weer gespeel, ou leerballe geskop en op die grasperk krieket gespeel terwyl een hom as die Springbokkolwer Roy McClean voordoen en die ander as die snelbouler Peter Heine sou optree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit was egter op die rugbyveld waar Dawie uitgestaan het. Hy het nooit in \u2019n ander posisie as skrumskakel gespeel nie, terwyl ouens soos ek eers onder die voorspelers ingespan en later agterlyn toe verskuif is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Met aanmoediging deur die wiskundeonderwyser en rugbyafrigter Ami Gonin het Dawie gereeld die plathand op die agterw\u00earelde van die heelwat groter voorspelers ingel\u00ea om ons in die losskrums en losgemale vorentoe te dryf. Daardie klein handjies kon slaan, hoor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niemand het egter ooit vir Dawie kwaad geword nie. Daarvoor was hy \u2019n te minlike en voorbeeldige mens. Ek kan nie onthou dat hy ooit na die hoof se kantoor ontbied is om vir ses van die bestes te buk nie. Hy was egter geen \u201cnerd\u201d nie. Agter die rug van sekere onderwysers het hy die mees groteske gesigsuitdrukkings gemaak om ou Wikkelspies of \u2019n ander latswaaier na te maak. Hy was ook een van \u2019n groepie matrieks wat n\u00e1 ons laaste skooldag na die Tygerberg-heuwels (nou toegebou) is om \u2019n bottel of twee Nederburg Paarl Riesling leeg te maak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e1 matriek het ons paaie geskei \u2013 Dawie is na Stellenbosch en ek na die Universiteit van Kaapstad. Tog het ons in voeling met mekaar gebly. So het Dawie, ek en een van sy Stellenbosch-spanmaats op \u2019n koue wintersdag in 1960 die tweede toets tussen die Springbokke en die All Blacks op Nuweland gekyk. Wat \u2019n treurige aff\u00eare was dit nie. Dit was nie net \u2019n saai stryd nie, maar die All Blacks het 11-3 gewen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit was \u2019n teleurgestelde skare wat n\u00e1 die eindfluitjie huiswaarts gekeer het. Terwyl ons treetjie vir treetjie nader aan die duikweg onder die Nuwelandse spoorlyn beweeg het, het grondboontjie-verkopers lustig \u201cPeanuts! Peanuts!\u201d geskree. Een het hoorbaar bygevoeg: \u201cVanaand is die Boerehart weer seer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Min het ek en Dawie daardie aand geweet dat hy presies twee jaar later op dieselfde veld sy buiging vir die Springbokke teen die Britse Leeus sou maak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Op 16 Junie daardie jaar was hy ook by toe ek en my vrou, Maureen, in die Groote Kerk in Kaapstad getroud is. Sy geskenk was Albert Camus se beroemde boek, The Outsider<\/i>. Op die binneblad het hy geskryf: \u201cFritz en Maureen, beste wense vir \u2019n wonderlike toekoms vanaf Saterdag 16 Junie tot op \u2019n gryse ouderdom!\u201d.<\/span> Die oud-Wellingtonner Pietman Retief en diaken in die gemeente onthou dat hulle een hittige Desember-aand \u2019n taai vergadering met die \u201comies\u201d van die kerkraad gehad het. Agterna het Dawie hom pastorie toe genooi vir \u2018n \u201cstukkie waatlemoen\u201d. Daar gekom, stap Dawie yskas toe en haal twee biere uit. En nou, Dawie? vra Pietman. Hy antwoord: \u201cEk het nie geweet dit gaan so moeilik wees nie.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Destyds was Dawie as Springbok gewild in die Kaap en die Boland, maar nie juis in Pretoria nie, waar Piet Uys die skrumskakel van Noord-Transvaal was. Dawie is een naweek tussen twee toetse gevra om \u2019n diens in Pretoria waar te neem.
