The friendly faces at the Klapmuts Medical Centre have
\ndedicated themselves to bridge the gap for locals seeking medical attention
\namong stretched state clinics or far away facilities since July 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Klapmuts it\u2019s commonplace for some patients choosing to
\nsuffer silently at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have had patients tell us so many times that they
\npreferred to stay ill at home, rather than seek basic care which does not serve
\nthem all too well,\u201d says Dr John Frith, a general practitioner who co-founded
\nthe practice with Dr Andr\u00e9 Van der Westhuizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlighted that he held nothing against state clinics
\nand respected the challenges they suffer with limited resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe demand is so high and patients were generally forced to
\npay three taxi fares just to reach hospitals in Paarl or Wellington,\u201d Frith
\nsays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLuckily, now we offer the community a clean, safe and
\naffordable medical centre in the heart of Klapmuts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Klapmuts Medical Centre offers competitive rates for
\nlow-income households of R450 per consultation that also includes prescribed
\nmedications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also have special days focussed on skin grafting, which
\nis not typically offered by state medical clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur patients regard us a family practice,\u201d he continues in
\npointing out that Van der Westhuizen is also married to his twin sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both got their medical degrees from Stellenbosch University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Cape Town, Frith has practised medicine
\nsince 2011, where he most recently worked at a GP practice in Cape Town, and
\npreviously managed an Emergency Room in Durban from 2014 to 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van der Westhuizen previously practised at a private
\nhospital. Both interned together at hospitals in East London while completing
\ntheir medical studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also work as the official doctors for the Bishop Lavis
\nPolice Academy [in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town] as a sideline. We do the academy\u2019s
\nmedical checks and official medical reports for trainees and tend to any
\non-site injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the motivation for opening the medical centre, he
\nsaid: \u201cWe simply saw a gap in the existing availability of medical services in
\nKlapmuts and its surrounding areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s more, the centre also seeks to grow its outreach to
\nthe wider Klapmuts community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first of this is a vegetable garden, which is being
\nestablished adjacent to the medical centre, for growing nutritious vegetables
\nfor needy patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis building was previously part of the old honey factory
\nin town,\u201d Frith said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter we managed to get our practice registered and
\ncompleted a six-month course to get our medical dispensing licence, it was just
\na matter of leasing the property and setting up shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the available land we have we have partnered with
\nexperienced local green thumbs known as EPJ Kleinboerdery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gardening organisation was established by Piet Prins,
\nJeremy van Kerwel, Jakobus Dirkse and Eron Jantjies in October last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prins, its chairperson, said so far it has created an
\nalready thriving veggie garden at Klapmuts Primary School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is also thanks to so many farmers\u2019 and businesses\u2019
\nsupport. And now the Klapmuts Medical Centre has given us land to expand our
\nveggie growing power even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are extremely grateful to the centre for helping us also
\nto support them in providing healthy foods to those in need. We plan to grow
\ncabbage, cauliflower, spinach, corn and many more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These modest men have already planted vegetables in one
\ncorner of the centre\u2019s property, although it was still in the developing
\nstages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are now busy working the soil to prepare the land for
\nmore veggie crops,\u201d Prins said. \u201cThis would require some more ploughing with
\ndiggers, tractors and materials, which we also humbly request from willing
\nfarmers and local businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With these Frith wishes to promote a healthy way of living for
\nKlapmuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis community mostly suffers from chronic lifestyle
\nillnesses such as cholesterol and high blood pressure,\u201d he said. \u201cThese
\nillnesses are directly related to diet, which is why we wish to highlight this
\ninitiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s also why we\u2019re so excited about getting the vegetable
\ngarden rolled out and, even more exciting, creating learning opportunities for
\npeople to start growing their own fresh produce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frith also believes today\u2019s youth are too disconnected from
\ntheir food sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe plan to host regular workshops to promote healthy
\nliving, eating and growing healthy and affordable foods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only are these doctors focused on physical well-being,
\nbut they also have a passion for tending to psychological and mental
\nconditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe get a lot of patients that stem from violence or
\nneglect, such as stabbings, farm-related accidents, drug abuse and alcoholism,\u201d
\nsaid Frith. \u201cThat is why I also want to pour my passion into patients with
\nunderlying anxiety, trauma and psychological distress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
