It\u2019s been a challenging year, and it seems like everyone in South Africa is tightening their belts. A recent McKinsey Global Consumer Sentiment Survey shows just how widespread the struggle is, with a staggering 87% of respondents admitting they\u2019re financially stretched. With the cost of living hitting new highs, Black Friday seems like a golden chance to make your money go further. But be cautious \u2013 those Black Friday deals that look so tempting? They might not be as great as they first appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This according to Charnel Collins, CEO of National Debt Advisors, who warned retailers who often employ smart marketing gags that they could have long-term consequences for consumers\u2019 financial health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first trick to look out for she said was when retailers sometimes give the impression of huge discounts by marking up prices before Black Friday. \u201cThey do this to make the discounts look bigger than they are,\u201d explained Collins. \u201cFor instance, something that usually costs R50 might be raised to R80 and then \u2018reduced\u2019 to R60 on Black Friday. It looks like a big saving, but it\u2019s not as good as it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Secondly, Collins pointed out that Black Friday is famous for its deals that don\u2019t last long, which can make consumers feel as if they need to buy something quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This kind of pressure often leads to buying things on impulse \u2013 even if they don\u2019t need or don\u2019t plan to buy. It\u2019s important to remember that making quick decisions, especially about spending money, usually isn\u2019t the best move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Shopify, research shows that while shoppers aim to snag bargains they often end up buying items impulsively, lured by the idea of a discount rather than the actual need or value of the product. In a recent survey more than half (52%) of respondents said they preferred taking a discount overpaying the regular price, even when they did not plan for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSurprisingly, even shoppers who make lists to control their Christmas spending end up buying items on Black Friday that don\u2019t align with their planned purchases,\u201d said Collins. \u201cThis is often a result of the emotional tug-of-war between the fear of missing out (FOMO) and buyer\u2019s remorse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also warned consumers against relying on credit for their Black Friday purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hidden fees and interest rates associated with credit card purchases can transform what appears to be a wise purchase into a prolonged financial burden. Collins stresses that many consumers fail to consider these added expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen you make a credit card purchase, you\u2019re not just paying the price on the tag,\u201d she said. \u201cYou may be committing to high interest rates and undisclosed fees that accumulate over time.
