Markus Muller (18), who earned the title of golden boy of schoolboy rugby in his final year at Paarl Gim, made history on Saturday (25 April) by becoming the youngest-ever player to represent the Stormers franchise in their 48-12 victory over Glasgow Warriors in the United Rugby Championship.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He came on as a replacement in the 66th minute at a stadium filled with jubilant fans celebrating the statement win. Despite limited time on the field the teenager delivered a solid defensive performance in the closing stages of the match. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yeah, [I’m] over the moon,” he told media after the game, his broad smile saying it all. “I’m just so glad I had at least a couple of minutes to play. I want to say thank you to everyone who’s believed in me, to all the coaches who thought I could do the job, unbelievable.”\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach John Dobson also expressed his satisfaction with Markus’ debut performance despite limited time, impressing with his composure and defence.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the rising star faced a mild setback following Saturday’s game. He will be sidelined for six weeks due to a finger injury, ruling him out of the Junior Springboks’ upcoming fixtures against Australia and New Zealand in early May. The injury is particularly disappointing given he would have been a strong candidate for selection in those matches, according to Netwerk24.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muller was among five u-20 players selected for Rassie Erasmus’ 49-man squad for the Springboks’ first in-person alignment camp in March, marking him as one of the country’s most promising young talents.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Markus’ achievement caps a successful long weekend for his alma mater, Paarl Gim. Its u-19 netball team defended their championship title at the Absa Wildeklawer tournament, defeating Helpmekaar College by one point in extra time to secure victory. The u-19 rugby team also delivered outstanding performances at the same tournament, concluding their campaign on Monday with a commanding 47-7 victory over Durban High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
