Wat as ‘n stil stokperdjie gedurende oomblikke van pyn begin het, het in ‘n kragtige akademiese reis vir die Universiteit Stellenbosch-gegradueerde (US) Annie de Villiers ontwikkel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annie se stille deursettingsvermo\u00eb is vandeesweek (Maandag 23 Maart) met ‘n meestersgraad in geskiedenis cum laude beloon. Haar tesis, “Avian Nation: A cultural and political history of blue cranes in Southern Africa, from the precolonial past to the present<\/em>,” is so uniek as wat dit diep persoonlik is en ondersoek hoe Suid-Afrika se nasionale vo\u00ebl kulturele identiteite, politieke narratiewe en omgewingsgeskiedenis gevorm het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haar werk is deur ‘n lewensveranderende diagnose ge\u00efnspireer, volgens ‘n verklaring deur die US<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komplekse streekspynsindroom (CRPS) is in 2021 by Annie gediagnoseer. Dit is ‘n toestand wat deur kroniese pyn gekenmerk word en is dikwels buite verhouding tot die aanvanklike besering of trauma. Die diagnose het di\u00e9 voormalige leerde van Paarl Gimnasium met konstante pyn laat saamleef.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hierdie versteuring het beheer geneem oor elke aspek van my lewe \u2013 dit het verander watter klere ek kan dra, hoe ek slaap, hoe ek by ‘n lessenaar sit en werk en watter sosiale geleenthede ek kan bywoon,” s\u00ea sy.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sy beklemtoon die onvoorspelbaarheid van die toestand as een van haar grootste uitdagings. “Sommige dae voel ek goed en kan ek saam met vriende padel speel of gaan stap, terwyl ek gedurende opvlammings vir dae aan die bed gekluister is. CRPS het my lewe baie onvoorspelbaar gemaak.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terwyl sy aan haar nuwe werklikheid gewoond geraak het, het Annie vertroosting op ‘n onverwagte plek gevind \u2013 vo\u00eblkyk. Wat as ‘n hanteerbare aktiwiteit gedurende pynaanvalle begin het, het geleidelik tot ‘n diep fassinering met vo\u00ebls en hul plek in die geskiedenis ontwikkel.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit is ‘n stokperdjie wat sy eers later in haar lewe ontdek het. Toe haar aanstaande tante gedurende die pandemie begin vo\u00eblkyk het, het Annie haar voorbeeld gevolg. “Op dae wanneer ek baie pyn gehad het, het my verloofde my op ritte geneem sodat ek na vo\u00ebls op die plaas in Komani (Queenstown) in die Oos-Kaap, waar ek nou woon, kon kyk,” vertel sy.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die tydverdryf het vinnig ‘n obsessie geword. Sy het selfs ‘n Instagram-blad, Funky Feathers, begin om haar waarnemings te deel. “Ek het heeltemal verslaaf geraak.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Om met ‘n kroniese siekte te leef, kan uitdagend en isolerend wees, s\u00ea sy. Maar deur haar belangstelling in kraanvo\u00ebls het Annie ‘n gevoel van gemeenskap onder vo\u00eblkykers, natuurbewaarders en medegeleerdes gevind. Sy het oor die land heen en oorsee gereis om wat sy die “kraanvo\u00ebl-evangelie” noem, te deel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hierdie frase word dikwels in kraanvo\u00ebl-bewaring gebruik om te verduidelik waarom kraanvo\u00ebls vir ons ekostelsels en biodiversiteit belangrik is,” verduidelik sy. “Vir my gaan dit daaroor om stories oor ons bloukraanvo\u00ebl te deel en waarom dit so ‘n belangrike historiese ikoon is. Nadat ek die navorsing gedoen het, voel ek baie beskermend oor hierdie kwesbare vo\u00ebls.” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akademiese reis sprei haar vlerke<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Haar akademiese reis het haar ver buite Stellenbosch geneem. Sy het aan ‘n bloukraanvo\u00ebl-beplanningswerksessie deelgeneem, ‘n referaat by die Suid-Afrikaanse Geskiedkundige Vereniging se konferensie aangebied en selfs vier maande in Venesi\u00eb as deel van ‘n internasionale globaliseringsprogram deurgebring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My siekte was nog nooit ‘n verskoning om nie my drome na te jaag nie,” s\u00ea sy.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tog het die werklikhede van die lewe met CRPS die studentelewe moeilik gemaak. As ‘n toppresteerder en toegewyde student het Annie te kampe gehad met wat sy beskryf as “talle stille stryde”. Sy het intensiewe behandelings en fisioterapie ondergaan en sy moes in 2024 noodgedwonge ses maande af neem vir mediese prosedures wat haar in erge pyn gelaat het. Sy kon dikwels nie loop nie.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Om n\u00e1 hierdie terugslag weer te begin studeer, het beduidende vasberadenheid en aanpassing geverg,” s\u00ea sy. “Ek het my graad uiteindelik in drie jaar voltooi.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annie het ondanks hierdie uitdagings aktief by haar departement betrokke gebly deur te tutor en dosente by te staan terwyl sy ook ho\u00ebrskoolgeskiedenis onderrig het. “Ek het probeer om so goed as wat ek kon, ‘n ‘normale lewe’ te lei en die meeste van my studentejare te maak,” vertel sy. “Met verloop van tyd het ek ‘n doelbewuste besluit geneem dat ek nie my siekte is nie en om elke dag te aanvaar soos dit kom.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
