The body of an unidentified person was discovered on Tuesday (17 March) close to the Huguenot Tunnel in Paarl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Cheslin Jacobs, an armed response officer at Vetus Schola in Paarl, he arrived on the scene after being informed by personnel of the Huguenot Tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The men who came across the body informed the personnel of the tunnel, who then called Vetus Schola and Paarl police.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jacobs said the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition with a foul smell in the air surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Capt Frederick van Wyk, a spokesperson for Western Cape police, confirmed the discovery of an unidentified dead person on 17 March, around 14:00. The body was unrecognisable. Van Wyk said the grim discovery was made close to the N1, just before the entrance to the tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“According to reports a badly decomposed body was found on the side of the river by two men who were busy collecting wood at the river,” he said. “A postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death, race and gender.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An inquest docket has since been registered at the Paarl Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
