The tourism debacle in Drakenstein is highlighted again this week.

The municipality said recently that the Wellington Museum is the new home of Wellington Tourism. That while museum personnel had not even been informed on the matter.

Tourism in the valley has been on the lips of all affected after it was announced earlier this year that the municipality will be ending it’s contract with the Drakenstein Local Tourism Authority (DLTA).

The DLTA has been privately running all tourism platforms in the valley for many years now, thus the announcement came as a shock to all.

The municipality reckons that it can run this entity now on it’s own, using their in-house personnel.

Ever since this announcement, the DLTA has been doing it’s best and with very little reserves to keep the tourism ship afloat. This while the municipality has however not made any strides in this very important prime economic and income generator.

It should thus be a key objective that the municipality support an independent tourism body, and not try and run the show with unskilled staff.

As a local businessman recently wrote: The fact is that a municipality cannot or must not run businesses that are commercially established. A municipality should focus on the basic mandates of power, water, roads and infrastructure.
