Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) has declined to comment on an incident in which taxis were set alight at Nyanga taxi rank on Saturday, 11 July, saying the matter is under police investigation. At least three taxis were burned by unknown people at the rank.

“All I can say is the taxis affected are on the Nyanga to Bellville route. We don’t know what happened because the incident occurred at night and there was no one there. So, we are waiting for the officers to do their investigation and inform us about the findings,” said Cata spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi.

Police confirm the Nyanga taxi rank fire

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk confirmed that three taxis were set alight at Nyanga Taxi Rank.

“According to reports, at about 22:30, officers on patrol were informed by CYCLOPS operators (the City’s strategic surveillance unit) of a fire at Nyanga taxi rank. On arrival, officers saw that three taxis were burning. The taxis were parked at the Bellville side of the rank,” he said, adding that a malicious damage to property case was registered for investigation.

Van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
