Dr. Ambrosius Swartbooi glo dat as \u2019n mens nie probeer nie,
\n\u201choe op aarde gaan jy weet of jy dit nie dalk kan doen nie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swartbooi, \u2019n kwadrupleeg, is in Desember as hoof van die radiologie-eenheid
\nby die Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe-hospitaal (RMSH) in Kimberley aangestel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoewel die motorongeluk op 16 Desember 2006 in Willows,
\nBloemfontein, sy mediese loopbaan tydelik ontwrig het, het hy gou besef dat
\ndaar steeds dinge is wat hy kan en wil doen, al is hy in \u2019n rolstoel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di\u00e9 voormalige hoofseun van die Ho\u00ebrskool Mariental in
\nNamibi\u00eb was n\u00e1 vyf jaar van mediese studies aan die Universiteit van die
\nVrystaat (UV) met sy tweede jaar van mediese internskap besig toe die ongeluk
\ngebeur het. Hy was toe 22 jaar oud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Direk n\u00e1 die motorongeluk  was hy vir twee maande in \u2019n
\nhospitaal in Bloemfontein \u2013 onder meer in die intensiewesorgeenheid \u2013 en daarna
\nvir meer as drie maande in rehabilitasie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toe reeds het Swartbooi besef dit gaan oor die 
\nspreekwoordelike klein stappies en uit eie ondervinding is sy raad aan ander
\nkwadruple\u00eb \u201com die kopskuif te maak.\u201d Tydens sy herstelperiode het hy beleef
\ndat mense om hom \u201cnet gaan l\u00ea\u201d en hulself afsonder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swartbooi, wie op nasionale skoolvlak aan atletiek en rugby
\ndeelgeneem het, het besluit hy gaan nie dieselfde pad volg nie en terwyl hy nog
\nin rehabilitasie was, het hy met spesiale toestemming en re\u00eblings \u2019n
\nrugbywedstryd tussen die Cheetahs en die Stormers by die rugbystadion in
\nBloemfontein gaan kyk. Hy is op \u2019n ambulansbed vervoer en het \u2019n deel van die
\nwedstryd uit sy rolstoel gekyk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swartbooi het ook daarop gefokus om diegene in \u2019n
\nsoortgelyke situasie as hy aan die beweeg te kry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steeds loopbaangerig<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hy kon vir die duur van 2007 nie met sy internskap voortgaan
\nnie, maar \u2019n hoogtepunt van daardie jaar was sy huweliksbevestiging  met
\nSusan Morgan, \u2019n verpleegster en oorspronklik van Kimberley, wat by die
\nKalahari Lodge in die Diamantstad plaasgevind het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Januarie 2008 het hy in die kantoor van die mediese
\nsuperintendent by die Universitas-hospitaal in Bloemfontein begin werk waar hy
\nmet allerlei administratiewe pligte gemoeid was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Augustus daardie jaar het hy skaduwerk by die dokters van
\ndie radiologie afdeling begin doen omdat hy geensins van plan was om van sy
\nmediese loopbaan afstand te doen nie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weens Swartbooi se gestremdheid het hy die keuse van
\npatologie, psigiatrie of radiologie gehad en sy keuse het op radiologie geval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Januarie 2009 het hy by die radiologie-afdeling van
\nUniversitas begin werk en weer sy studies aangepak. Intussen het hy ook
\nSuid-Afrikaanse burgerskap gekry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2014 het hy sy finale radiologie eksamen vir sy
\nmeestersgraad in medisyne (MMED) afgel\u00ea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As kwadrupleeg het hy sy eksamens geskryf terwyl hy die pen
\nmet albei hande vasgehou het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016 het Swartbooi die  navorsingskomponent van sy
\nspesialisasie in radiologie voltooi en in Desember sy MMED-graad behaal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar weens administratiewe kwessies het die Health
\nProfessions Council of South Africa (HPSCA) sy registrasie as spesialis in 2017
\nafgewys, en ongeag talle korrespondensie in die verband, was Swartbooi se
\nenigste opsie om as spesialis te kon registreer, om die College of
\nMedicine-eksamen af te l\u00ea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So het hy die eksamen suksesvol voltooi en vir die tweede
\nkeer \u2013 in Mei 2018 \u2013 gegradueer en in Junie 2018 is hy as \u2019n spesialis
\ngeregistreer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swartbooi het in Augustus 2017 reeds as \u2019n mediese beampte
\nby die RMSH begin werk en later as \u2019n spesialis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tot in November 2018 het hy saam met twee ander spesialiste
\nin radiologie by di\u00e9 provinsiale opleidingshospitaal gewerk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sedert hul aftrede is Swartbooi die enigste spesialis in di\u00e9
\nveld vir die Noord-Kaapse Departement van Gesondheid. Hier is hy elke dag en
\nna-ure aan diens en die enigste een wat sake in die afdeling kontroleer, na-ure
\nbystand verleen, en talle administratiewe take verrig. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gelukkig bly hy naby die hospitaal, het direkte
\ninternetverbinding en kan ook van die huis af werk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tegnologie en die opgang van digitale platforms het sy
\nwerkswyse baie makliker gemaak en sy werk is meestal op rekenaars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behalwe die interpretasie van onder meer X-strale, sonars,
\nmammogramme, deurligtings, CT- en MRI-skanderings by die RMSH en die hantering
\nvan verwysings van distrikshospitale, is hy ook vir die interpretasie van onder
\nmeer CT-skanderings van die Dr. Harry Surtie-hospitaal in Upington
\nverantwoordelik. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swartbooi is ook deurlopend by die akademiese ontwikkeling
\nvan mediese beamptes in sy eenheid betrokke en ook onder meer by die
\nsamestelling van lesings vir derde en vyfde jaar mediese studente by die UV, en
\ndie samestelling en merk van eksamenvraestelle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elke pasi\u00ebnt verdien tyd<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sy doelwit is om ten minste twee spesialiste en tien mediese
\nbeamptes in sy eenheid te h\u00ea, wat ook in Upington kan werk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVir eenvoudige ondersoeke van tien minute moet pasi\u00ebnte van
\nbyvoorbeeld Springbok 1\u2009200\u2009km afl\u00ea. As ek iemand in Upington kan h\u00ea, sal dit
\ngeweldig help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cElke pasi\u00ebnt verdien tyd en aandag. Elkeen moet volle diens
\nontvang,\u201d s\u00ea hy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swartbooi visualiseer ook \u2019n maandelikse uitreik na die
\ndistrikte vir die lewering van dienste vir onder meer ultraklankskanderings en
\nX-straal ondersoeke. Hy sal ook graag wil sien dat spesialis-opleiding van
\nmediese beamptes, in samewerking met die UV, by RMSH plaasvind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTydens mediese studies kry hulle geen blootstelling aan
\nradiologie nie. Vir hulle is dit \u2019n onbekende terrein en dit neem een tot ses
\nmaande om basiese bevoegdheid daarin te bereik,\u201d s\u00ea hy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy sal ook graag wil sien dat mediese beamptes in opleiding
\nby die UV op \u2019n rotasiegrondslag by RMSH betrokke raak, wat ook ekstra
\nblootstelling vir hulle is.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHet jy al probeer?\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wanneer Swartbooi nie werk nie, wat baie selde is, lees hy
\ngraag en hou daarvan om rugby- en krieketwedstryde te volg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2019n Groot hoogtepunt vir Swartbooi was toe hy in 2011 \u2019n
\nomgeboude voertuig gekry het wat van Engeland ingevoer is. Di\u00e9 VW Caddy was
\ngoedkoper om in te voer as om hier te laat ombou. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die ombouing bring mee dat hy van die agterdeur van die
\nvoertuig tot voor die stuurwiel op sy rolstoel kan beweeg en vandaar met
\nhandkontroles die voertuig bestuur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die ombouing is so gedoen dat sy vrou dit ook kan bestuur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy huiwer nie om lang afstande te ry nie, en het selfs al
\nWindhoek toe gery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Om sy omgeboude voertuig te leer bestuur, het hy sy bo-lyf
\nbegin versterk en op stil tye al meer en meer geoefen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs jy nie probeer nie, gaan jy dit nie regkry nie,\u201d
\nbeklemtoon hy weer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDit is dieselfde met mense wat nie met \u2019n gestremdheid leef
\nnie. Hulle kla oor dit of dat wat nie met hulle gebeur nie. My vraag is altyd:
\nhet jy al probeer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProf. Coert de Vries het vir ons as studente geleer: Moenie
\nmet \u2019n probleem na my toe kom nie; identifiseer dit en kom na my toe met \u2019n
