{"id":59996,"date":"2022-02-06T09:24:05","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T07:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/surgery-life-changing-20220201-2\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T12:35:14","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T10:35:14","slug":"surgery-life-changing-20220201-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/surgery-life-changing-20220201-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Surgery \u2018life-changing\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The possibility that she may not raise the last R400 000 needed for her son\u2019s life-changing surgery on 5 May is of great concern to Resegofetse Molale from Kuruman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has already paid the deposit of $10 000 to secure her son Phetogo\u2019s surgery date at the Paley Orthopedic and Spine Institute in Florida. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phetogo will turn five in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surgery, quoted at approximately R1,5 million, can only be performed in America and is urgently needed to repair Phetogo\u2019s rare orthopedic condition called congenital pseudar\u00adthrosis of the tibia (CPT). Defined as a \u201cfalse joint\u201d, this condition is a break in the bone that fails to heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhetogo will start preoperative procedures on 21 April, two weeks prior to the surgery date,\u201d Molale says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_4a8bde38\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cWe still need to raise R400 000. The full balance must be paid 15 working days before the surgery date.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"citation\">Resegofetse Molale<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>South African surgeons suggested amputation as the best alternative for Phetogo\u2019s leg, but Molale always wanted to afford him an opportunity to walk on both legs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After intensive research she read about the institute and of Dr Dror Paley, who has been treating children with this condition for over 28 years. He has been able to achieve a 100% success rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she came across a <span>Drum<\/span> article about a South African girl with the same condition who underwent surgery at Paley\u2019s institute, her communi\u00adcation with the institute started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has since managed to raise R1,1 million for the surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhetogo and I will have to be in Florida for three months, and accommo\u00addation is another challenge,\u201d Molale says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have accommo\u00addation in close proximity to the hospital, but don\u2019t have funds to pay for that yet. They charge $40 per night, and only have an available room for the first half of our stay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am trying to secure free accommo\u00addation with the Unlimbited Foundation, which helps families who go for medical procedures at Paley\u2019s, but am still awaiting their response.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also has applied for the SARS S18 tax exemption certificate to issue to those who donate, but the application has not yet been finalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, Phetogo is doing well at his cr\u00e8che and a brace is helping to protect his leg. As he grows, however, his fibula is being pushed out by his broken tibia, almost cutting through his skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile it is possible that we might not reach the target in time, I believe there are people who can help to get Phetogo his life-changing surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Donations can be made into the bank account of the non-profit organisation Phetogo Molale Foundation: Help A Child Walk, or on the crowdfunding page BackaBuddy.
