The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) confirmed on Monday (07\/03) that its officials had launched an independent investigation into an incident at the Tswelopele Correctional Centre in Kimberley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), two inmates died and a third is being treated in hospital after three inmates were apparently involved in an attack on a correctional services official. In an attempt to defuse the situation, a scuffle is said to have ensued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DCS stated the three inmates had suffered injuries. Two inmates later died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The JICS said that it condemned violence of all kinds in correctional centres, and was concerned about the deaths. Emerantia Cupido, JICS spokesperson, said once the independent investigation was concluded, a report with recommendations would be compiled and forwarded to the DCS and the portfolio
