Bail was denied on Monday (05\/09) for medical practitioner Ilunga Kalasa (38), who is accused of raping a 17-year-old patient during a medical consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the bail application the prosecution requested that another matter in which Kalasa is facing a charge of sexual assault be joined with the rape case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The application was granted, and Kalasa will now be charged in both matters jointly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the second case it is alleged that on 20 April the accused sexually assaulted a 25-year-old patient during a medical examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Kimberley Magistrate\u2019s Court also heard through the affidavit by the defence that the accused was practising as a medical assistant and not as a doctor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kalasa was apparently not registered with any medical council to operate as a medical practitioner, and did not have legal papers to work in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Mojalefa Senokoatsane, regional spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Kalasa entered the country on a visitor\u2019s permit and is an illegal immigrant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When presenting the bail judgement, the magistrate informed the applicant that there were no circumstantial reasons that warranted him to be granted bail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case has been provisionally postponed to 26 September for possible additional charges against the accused and a decision from the Director of Public Prosecution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
