Barely hours after saying \u201cI do\u201d, Peter Present and his
\nbride left home to join the armed struggle and to live a double life where not
\neven family or friends knew their secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 29 November, Present\u2019s book, Quiet Activists: A Memoir of
\nLove, Purpose, Family and Fighting for Justice in South Africa<\/em>, was launched by
\nthe McGregor Museum in Kimberley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this book, Present shares what prompted him and his bride
\nto make this decision, and he shares his journey of learning to trust again and
\nof overcoming the last-remaining shackles that held him hostage in his mind,
\nlong after freedom had been won. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book is described as offering another perspective on the
\narmed struggle \u2013 what it was like as a young married couple to join Umkhonto we
\nSizwe; the training they undertook outside South Africa, and how, decades
\nlater, the effects of having to operate secretly took its toll on the author. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo on the front page of the book was taken in
\nKimberley with the launch of the United Democratic Front in Kimberley in July
\n1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the launch, Alistair Andrews introduced Present to the
\nguest, telling them that he met Present on the morning of 4 January 1982 when
\nthey  <\/span>reported to start their draughting
\ncourse at the De Beers Draughtsman Training Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Present originates from Elsies River in the Western
\nCape, his political consciousness was honed in Kimberley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although a qualified draughtsman, Present also completed
\nseveral qualifications in education, and started his career in Education
\nAdministration at the Western Cape Department of Education in 1996. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amongst
\nother, he was the advisor to the MEC for Education, chief director responsible
\nfor policy coordination, infrastructure planning, human capital planning and
\nstrategic planning, and also joined Deloitte to support provincial Education
\nDepartments to improve their administrative systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2019 Present is a partner in a software development
\ncompany, HashData, and he continues to contribute towards improving education
\nin the country. He is also a director in JobAbled, an non-government
\norganisation whose focus is to find job opportunities for people with special
\nneeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
