Vanjaar, en volgende jaar, gaan \u2019n blink jaar vir die Elizabeth Conradie-skool vir leerlinge met fisieke gestremdhede (Elcon) wees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nie net is Martha van Zyl wat reeds tien jaar by die skool werksaam is vanjaar heeltyds as hoof by di\u00e9 skool in Kimberley aangestel nie, maar is skooluniforms opgehelder en nuwe heldergroen dasse bekendgestel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die gebouekompleks se dakke en plafonne word vervang en ander noodsaaklike herstelwerk gedoen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die skool se 21 matrikulante het verlede jaar \u2019n 90%-slaagsyfer in die nasionale seniorsertifikaateksamen behaal, en dit is daarom onder die 13 topskole in die Frances Baard-distrik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boonop heers groot opgewondenheid oor \u2019n groep leerlinge wat aan die einde van Maart in Kaapstad aan \u2019n sportbyeenkoms vir leerlinge met gestremdhede gaan deelneem.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In die komende vakansie gaan twee nuwe, veiliger ingange by die skool geskep word om verkeersveiligheid te verbeter, en \u2019n groot makietie word vir volgende jaar beplan wanneer die skool 50 jaar oud word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die skool huisves 400 leerlinge van gr. R tot gr. 12; en 120 personeellede, wat onderwysers, ondersteuningspersoneel en die beheerliggaam, insluit, is by die skool betrokke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tog het die skool heelwat uitdagings, s\u00ea Van Zyl. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cElke sent moet drie keer omgedraai word, planne moet bedink word. Ons leer almal om vindingryk te dink. Ons het te min fisio-, arbeids- en spraakterapeute wat na die kinders se gesondheid omsien. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDie terapeute is net een dag per week vir ons leerlinge beskikbaar omdat hulle ook na ander skole moet gaan. Omtrent net leerlinge in die laer grade kan die terapeute spreek.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die behoefte aan \u2019n berader of skoolsielkundige is groot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOns moet self beraders betaal om na ons leerlinge se behoeftes om te sien. Dit is verskriklik vir \u2019n kind met spierdistrofie om te sien hoe sy of haar liggaam agteruitgegaan. Of \u2019n leerling wat nie-gestremd voor \u2019n motorongeluk was, wat nou op tienjarige ouderdom \u2019n parapleeg is. So \u2019n kind moet emosioneel ondersteun word.\u201d<\/div>\n

Vroe\u00ebr jare het die skool genoeg terapeute gehad en is die siekeboeg 24 uur \u2019n dag bedryf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOns het net genoeg verpleegpersoneel wat bedags tussen 08:00 en 16:00 werk. Daar is nie personeel wat snags leerlinge met erge gestremdhede kan versorg nie. Die betrokke leerlinge moet daagliks met \u2019n bus skool toe aangery word omdat hulle nie in die koshuis kan bly nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDit sal wonderlik wees as die departement van gesondheid in samewerking met die onderwysdepartement maandeliks \u2019n kliniek vir kinders en volwassenes met gestremdhede by die skool kan aanbied waar spesialiste hul dienste aanbied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Een oogmerk is om \u2019n afsonderlike afdeling vir kinders met outisme te skep, waar na hul unieke behoeftes in aparte klasse omgesien kan word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van Zyl s\u00ea die skool steun op die gemeenskap se ondersteuning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKimberley se mense is wonderlik. Mense gee gereeld enigiets van klere tot matte, alles goed wat ons kan gebruik. Ons huur een van ons geboue aan \u2019n private skool uit vir \u2019n inkomste, en \u2019n ander gebou word as \u2019n gastehuis benut vir geleenthede soos die Wildeklawer-sporttoernooi.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die skool moet herstelwerk by die koshuise doen, wat baie geld kos. Weens omstandighede het onderhoud oor die jare heen agterwe\u00eb gebly en het lekkende dakke plafonne laat inval, het pleister van mure afgeval en is die elektriese bedrading onveilig op sekere plekke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hulle sit in rolstoele of het nie al hul ledemate nie, maar vir hulle is die lewe \u2019n lied. Ons wil hulle geborge laat voel; menswaardigheid, \u2019n waardestelsel en selfvertroue gee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
