\nKimberley Technical High School (THS) were the first from South Africa and the
\nAfrican continent to ever participate in the Growing Beyond Earth (GBE)
\n2022-\u201923 competition. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 372 schools across six continents started trial 1
\nof the GBE competition in September, said Keamogetswe Thomas, communication
\nofficer at the Northern Cape Entrepreneurship Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said only 58 schools out of the 372 made it through to
\ntrial 2, including the two Kimberley-based school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trial 2 culminated in a student research symposium where
\nschools had to present and showcase their scientific research virtually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boys\u2019 High ranked in the top 11 performing schools, scoring
\n192 out of 200, and were awarded a special merit award for exemplary teamwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On their work, one of the judges commented, \u201cThey
\ninvestigated the effect of humidity on plant growth. They tested their
\nprediction that higher humidity could increase yield with constant growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe experiment was well-conceived and executed and
\ncommunicated clearly with a very high-quality presentation. Strong work
\nindeed.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
THS ranked in the top 39 performing schools, scoring 185 out
\nof 200. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A judge\u2019s remark was, \u201cThis was obviously well-rehearsed and
\nprofessionally performed. Taking the initial observations about algal growth
\nand then using that as a building block for a new investigation was a great
\npiece of science! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cElements like using randomisation in the trial design
\nshowed a thoughtful approach to setting up the experiment. The discussion with
\nthe judges was also sophisticated, showing a real ability to think in the
\nmoment. Great job!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thomas said at the core of the learners\u2019 achievement lies
\nthe fact that they participated in a groundbreaking classroom-based citizen
\nscience project that has NASA attached to it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This initiative aims to advance NASA\u2019s research on growing
\nplants in space by conducting plant experiments in a state-of-the-art plant
\nhabitat, reminiscent of the Vegetable Production System (Veggie) aboard the
\nInternational Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NASA looks toward a long-term human presence beyond Earth\u2019s
\norbit, with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) challenges
\nrelated to food production in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reflecting on experience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nReflecting on his experience, Lukhanya Wolfe, a learner of
\nBoys\u2019 High, said it helps to shape his ambitions for helping the earth, and
\nfinding ways to sustain life beyond our planet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have always been interested in contributing to the well-being
\nof our planet. This project holds the key to ensuring that we sustain our
\nplanet for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWith the success we achieved in the GBE competition, I
\nenvision our contributions having the potential to redefine the agricultural
\nspace,\u201d expressed Tshiamo Molusi, another Boys\u2019 High learner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe can offer productive and sustainable farming methods
\nthat address pressing issues like water shortages and climate change while
\nsimultaneously increasing food production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur GBE experience opens new possibilities and frontiers
\nfor future space missions. It has shown us that sustainable food production is
\nfeasible even in environments previously deemed unsuitable for plant growth,
\nsuch as space shuttles or other planets. Hydroponics has emerged as an
\nefficient and promising farming method. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe believe that our school\u2019s ongoing participation in GBE
\nwill contribute to the success of future space excursions, enabling scientists
\nto sustain themselves during these missions,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khanyile Kalipi, a learner of THS, also shared his view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFarming with new technology has propelled us into a realm
\nof endless possibilities, especially as traditional land farming faces
\nincreasing challenges in South Africa. Embracing agri-tech and innovation on a
\nlarger scale can have a profound impact, making landfarming problems a thing of
\nthe past,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Contributing data to NASA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nEstablished in 2015 as a partnership between the Fairchild
\nTropical Botanic Garden and NASA\u2019s Exploration Research and Technology
\nProgrammes, GBE enables student community scientists to contribute data towards
\nNASA\u2019s mission planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
GBE presented the learners the opportunity to showcase their
\ntalent and passion for STEM, innovation, and agri-tech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The GBE competition not only celebrates the outstanding
\nachievements of these Northern Cape learners but also underscores the profound
\nconnection between agriculture and space exploration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through a local programme of the Northern Cape
\nEntrepreneurship Academy, GreenLab.bi, the two schools are part of ten other
\nschools in the Northern Cape looking at innovative solutions to address key
\nproblems around food security and climate change using hydroponics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The participation of the two schools in GBE was made
\npossible by the non-profit company (NPC) Northern Cape Entrepreneurship Academy,
\nwhich aims to educate and drive sustainable development with learners and young
\npeople through various initiatives such as GreenLab.bi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
GreenLab.bi has been made possible through the support of
\nthe United States Mission to South Africa Public Affairs Section at the U.S.
\nConsulate General in Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nBoys\u2019 High, said it helps to shape his ambitions for helping the earth, and
\nfinding ways to sustain life beyond our planet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nthat address pressing issues like water shortages and climate change while
\nsimultaneously increasing food production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nfor future space missions. It has shown us that sustainable food production is
\nfeasible even in environments previously deemed unsuitable for plant growth,
\nsuch as space shuttles or other planets. Hydroponics has emerged as an
\nefficient and promising farming method. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nwill contribute to the success of future space excursions, enabling scientists
\nto sustain themselves during these missions,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nincreasing challenges in South Africa. Embracing agri-tech and innovation on a
\nlarger scale can have a profound impact, making landfarming problems a thing of

Established in 2015 as a partnership between the Fairchild
\nTropical Botanic Garden and NASA\u2019s Exploration Research and Technology
\nProgrammes, GBE enables student community scientists to contribute data towards
\nNASA\u2019s mission planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
GBE presented the learners the opportunity to showcase their
\ntalent and passion for STEM, innovation, and agri-tech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The GBE competition not only celebrates the outstanding
\nachievements of these Northern Cape learners but also underscores the profound
\nconnection between agriculture and space exploration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through a local programme of the Northern Cape
\nEntrepreneurship Academy, GreenLab.bi, the two schools are part of ten other
\nschools in the Northern Cape looking at innovative solutions to address key
\nproblems around food security and climate change using hydroponics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The participation of the two schools in GBE was made
\npossible by the non-profit company (NPC) Northern Cape Entrepreneurship Academy,
\nwhich aims to educate and drive sustainable development with learners and young
\npeople through various initiatives such as GreenLab.bi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
GreenLab.bi has been made possible through the support of
\nthe United States Mission to South Africa Public Affairs Section at the U.S.
\nConsulate General in Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
