Awie Horn (81), \u2019n legende in onderwys- en boerderykringe van De Aar, is op 23 Junie n\u00e1 \u2019n lang siekte oorlede. Hy het aan Parkinson se siekte gely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horn, wat geliefd en wyd gerespekteer onder inwoners was, was 30 jaar \u2019n Afrikaanse onderwyser by die Ho\u00ebrskool De Aar. Hy het \u2019n groot invloed op duisende leerlinge gehad wat veel wyer as sy vak en diensjare gestrek het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volgens een oudleerling \u201ckon jy met enige generasie praat wat in De Aar skoolgegaan het en hulle sal van meneer Horn praat. Dit voel of hy 100 jaar daar skoolgegee het.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nog een s\u00ea: \u201cHy het respek in sy klasse afgedwing sonder om ooit te raas of moeilik te wees. Hy kon kinders opsom en die goeie in elkeen raaksien. Geen leerling wou hom teleurstel nie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2019n Engelssprekende wat in sy klas was, s\u00ea: \u201cHy het \u2019n leeftyd se mense gedien. Geslagte wat was en geslagte wat kom, sal die vrug en voordeel van sy lewe erken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albertus Human Horn is op 19 Desember 1941 op die plaas Valspan in die Prieska-distrik gebore. Hy het op die plaas Biesieslaagte grootgeword en aan die Ho\u00ebrskool Hopetown matrikuleer, waar hy akademies presteer en in sport uitgeblink het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Griekwaland-Wes o.19 rekord vir die 220 tre\u00eb-naelloop het lank agter sy naam gestaan. N\u00e1 matriek het hy sy onderwysgraad in Bloemfontein met Afrikaans en liggaamlike opvoeding as hoofvakke behaal. Daarna is hy na die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) vir nagraadse studies in Afrikaans. Sy onderwysloopbaan het in 1965 in De Aar begin waar hy tot adjunkhoof gevorder het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onderwys was vir hom \u2019n roeping en nie \u2019n beroep nie.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hy het nie net \u2019n liefde vir Afrikaans by leerlinge vasgel\u00ea nie, hulle het na hom opgekyk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die matriekklas van 1986 s\u00ea: \u201cSy manier van loop, sit of staan was doelgerig en vol selfvertroue. Nooit met sy hande in die sakke nie, maar altyd statig en stewig gestaan om elkeen van ons te help.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horn se leerlinge onthou hom vir sy liefde vir gedigte. Dit matriekklas van 1973 onthou Horn deur Jan F.E. Cilliers se bekende gedig, \u201cGeneraal De Wet\u201d: \u201cStil broers, daar gaan \u2019n man verby, hy groet en dis verlaas\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afgesien van \u2019n kleurryke onderwysloopbaan het Horn deeltyds op die plaas Hartebeeshoek net buite De Aar met dorperskape geboer. Sy Albian-dorperstoet is een van die oudstes en bestes in die land en het 12 Suid-Afrikaanse kampioene en toppryse op veilings opgelewer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horn het in die nasionale en internasionale bokbedryf presteer. Met sy kennis van diere en genetika was hy instrumenteel in die ontwikkeling en registrasie van twee nuwe bokrasse, die Kalahari Red en die Blackberry. Hy was ook \u2019n gekwalifiseerde afrigter en beoordelaar van saalperde. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bekend vir sy humor, kwinkslae en stories, het hy ook sy outobiografie, Van Toeka tot Twitter<\/em>, geskryf. Daarin meld hy \u2019n Einstein-filosofie waaruit hy inspirasie geput het: \u201cAs die menslike gees eers eenmaal aan iets buitengewoons onderwerp is, kan hy nooit weer met die normale, die alledaagse, tevrede wees nie\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In een hoofstuk oor familie, skryf Horn: \u201cHoe waar is die gesegde nie, dat as jy eers eenmaal van De Aar se water gedrink het, kom jy altyd weer terug. Ook elkeen van my kinders en kleinkinders se wortels l\u00ea diep in De Aar se aarde begrawe\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horn word oorleef deur sy vrou, Brenda, met wie hy 58 jaar getroud was, seuns Ian en Albie, wat albei vir Vrystaat- en Griekwas-rugby uitgedraf het, en dogters Anri\u00e9 Venter en Min\u00e9 Olivier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy laat ook 12 kleinkinders en een agterkleinkind na. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
