Baai Strauss (81), wat as een van Upington se knapste onderwysers beskryf word, is onlangs n\u00e1 \u2019n operasie in \u2019n hospitaal in die Wes-Kaap oorlede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Melchoir Strauss se bydrae tot die gemeenskap is onuitwisbaar, s\u00ea Rudolph (Bokkie) Saal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strauss was een van die gemeenskapsleiers wat baie gedoen het in die opvoeding van menige skoolkind in Upington en nabye omgewing, s\u00ea Saal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oom Baai, soos wat Strauss deur baie mense genoem is, is op 7 September 1941 op Vaalkoppies gebore. Hy was een van 11 kinders in die gesin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy het hom n\u00e1 matriek as onderwyser aan die destydse Opleidingskollege Suid-Kaap in Oudtshoorn bekwaam, en later \u2019n derdejaar se opleiding by die Perseverance-kollege in Kimberley voltooi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In \u2019n veelbesproke huweliksbevestiging is oom Baai op 28 Desember 1972 met Carol Mouton getroud. Die paartjie is in Oudtshoorn getroud omdat Carol se pa nie ten gunste van hul huwelik was nie. Daar is na hulle verwys as die paartjie wat uit Upington weggehardloop het om in Oudtshoorn te gaan trou sonder toestemming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strauss se eerste onderwys\u00adervaring is in Vanrhynsdorp opgedoen, en later was hy ook onderwyser en skoolhoof aan onder meer Vooruitsig Prim\u00ear, Boplaas, Kameelmond en Blaauwskop, waar hy \u2019n groot indruk op sy leerlinge en ander onderwysers gelaat het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e1 35 jaar in diens van die onderwys het oom Baai halt geroep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die egpaar was \u2019n gewilde en blymoedige paartjie in die gemeenskap, en het gereeld saam toere deur die land \u2013 en ook in die buiteland \u2013 onderneem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hulle het twee seuns, Nolan en Ruaan. Hul enigste dogter, Liesl, is in 1997 in \u2019n ongeluk oorlede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saal s\u00ea dat Strauss se heengaan \u2019n groot leemte in die pensioen\u00adorganisasie, die Upington-belastingbetalersvereniging, sy gesin, familie, vriendekring en kerk los. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSy nederigheid, kwinkslae en medemenslikheid sal ons altyd onthou. Waarlik \u2019n netjiese en ordentlike mens het ons verlaat,\u201d s\u00ea Saal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strauss se begrafnisdiens het op 8 Julie in die Congregational-kerk in Upington plaasgevind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy laat sy vrou, twee seuns, twee skoondogters en ses kleinkinders agter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
