The first edition of the Ride2TheKaroo Challenge promises to transform enthusiastic cyclers into ultimate mountain bikers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Presented by Oryx Endurance Event Management, this 100 miler ride on 26 August commences at 06:00 from Kimberley to traverse, on gravel roads, the topography of the Northern Cape. The route finishes at the Klipkraal Guest Farm just outside Hopetown, which is described as the gate to the Karoo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe route is not technical, but challenges riders due to the ruggedness of the terrain and a few hills to overcome. The full-distance race starts with a flat section. Riders then make their way down and over the Modder River and heads over to the Karoo,\u201d said Kobus Burger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The challenge is accessible to cyclists of all skill levels, while pushing boundaries and embracing personal growth as a gravel or mountain biker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preparing for a 100-mile cycling event, such as Ride2TheKaroo, requires dedication and a well-thought-out training plan, according to tips that are provided on oryxendurance.co.za: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n 1.<\/span> Create a training plan X<\/span> Include a mix of long rides, interval training, and rest days. Gradually increase your weekly mileage and intensity to avoid overtraining and avertable injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 2.<\/span> Long rides X<\/span> Progressively increase the distance of your long rides each week. Aim to complete at least a couple of rides that are close to or slightly longer than the event distance to build confidence and endurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 3.<\/span> Nutrition and hydration X<\/span> During long rides, practise fuelling with the same foods and drinks you plan to use during the event, to ensure it works well for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 4.<\/span> Rest and recovery X<\/span> Adequate rest is crucial for allowing your muscles to recover and adapt to training. Incorporate rest days into your training plan and listen to your body if you feel fatigued or sore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 5.<\/span> Bike maintenance X<\/span> Your bike must be in good working condition. Regularly check the tyres, brakes, gears, and chain. Get any necessary repairs done in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 6.<\/span> Mental preparation X<\/span> Visualise yourself completing the event successfully and use positive affirmations to boost your confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 7.<\/span> Test your gear X<\/span> Use your long training rides to test your cycling gear, including clothing, shoes, helmet, and any accessories you plan to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 8.<\/span> Tapering X<\/span> In the week leading up to the event, reduce your training intensity (taper) to allow your body to be fully recovered and fresh for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n 9.<\/span> Arrive early X<\/span> Arrive at the event location a day or two early to acclimate to the climate and surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ride2TheKaroo is open to solo participants, as well as relay teams consisting of four or two riders.
