{"id":49679,"date":"2023-12-06T14:35:17","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T12:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/bravado-major-reason-for-youth-road-crashes-20231206\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T15:59:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T13:59:17","slug":"bravado-major-reason-for-youth-road-crashes-20231206","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/bravado-major-reason-for-youth-road-crashes-20231206\/","title":{"rendered":"Bravado major reason for youth road crashes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Every year many young road users are lost to road traffic crashes, but why are so many young lives lost, and what can be done to prevent this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young drivers pose a high risk on roads not only in South Africa, but globally as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International research has revealed that the characteristics of crashes involving young drivers differ from those involving drivers with more experience in some important ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, crashes involving alcohol, speeding, and the overloading of passengers are about 20 times more likely for teens than for middle-aged drivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"InfoBlock\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_17b2a339\">\n<div class=\"heading\">Most fatalities amongst younger male road users<\/div>\n<div class=\"text\">Fatalities peak among younger male road users, and occur most often at night and during the weekend.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This has been confirmed by data collected and compiled from across South Africa as well as calculations from actuaries in the insurance industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-makes-young-drivers-a-bigger-crash-risk-factors-include-the-following\"><strong>What makes young drivers a bigger crash risk? Factors include the following:<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Driver inexperience;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bravado, ego, or a sense of \u201cinvincibility\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>failure to wear seatbelts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drunk or impaired driving;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>night driving or driver fatigue; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>distracted driving or walking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The above-mentioned factors are not exclusive to South African students and younger drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-driver-inexperience\"><span><strong>Driver inexperience<\/strong><\/span> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Young drivers do not have the necessary driving experience and often display a lack of mature judgment. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new driver has seldom been exposed to driving in difficult conditions such as in bad weather, on icy roads, in strong winds, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also may not have the experience of driving in remote locations, driving in mountainous areas, on gravel roads, and with different models of vehicles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They fail to adjust their driving to the conditions, leading to numerous vehicle rollovers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inexperience is the reason why these drivers are more likely to underestimate hazardous situations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As opposed to older drivers, they are more likely to drive speedily, run red lights, make illegal turns, drive after using alcohol or drugs, or ride with an intoxicated driver.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With some additional training the young driver can be assisted to prevent collisions by making use of the Standard Accident Prevention Formula:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>1.&nbsp;<\/span><span><strong>Recognise the hazard<\/strong>:<\/span> Think and look as far ahead as possible. Never assume everything will be all right and always expect the unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>2.&nbsp;<\/span><span><strong>Understand the defence<\/strong>:<\/span> There are certain methods of handling each traffic situation; know these and teach yourself to react accordingly when the need arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>3.&nbsp;<\/span><span><strong>Act timeously<\/strong>:<\/span> Once you have seen the hazard and you have recognised the defence, never adopt a \u2018wait and see\u2019 attitude as you will be wasting valuable time and space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bravado-ego-or-a-sense-of-invincibility\"><strong>Bravado, ego, or a sense of \u201cinvincibility\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Young drivers, especially male drivers, tend to have an attitude of \u201cfeeling invincible\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is the mistaken belief that \u201cit will not happen to me\u201d and \u201cI know what I am doing.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young drivers have a sense that they can get away with transgressions \u2013 a feeling of bravado whereby \u201cI can get away with anything\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This leads to unnecessary risk-taking, aggressive driving behaviour, and road rage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations include:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although exterior and interior checks of your car are vital, an attitude check is just as helpful in preventing accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A positive, pro-active attitude can really help reduce collisions.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These include a tolerance and consideration for other road users, and restraining yourself from reacting aggressively to another road user\u2019s aggressive behaviour; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>holding a realistic view of your own driving abilities; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>having concern for your safety and that of your passengers and other road users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is necessary to drive at or above the speed limit it should be done with complete concentration, clear visibility and knowledge of your stopping distance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you increase your speed, you should expect an increase of your required braking distance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-failure-to-wear-seatbelts\"><strong>Failure to wear seatbelts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Research indicates that teens have the lowest rate of seatbelt use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teen passengers greatly increase the crash risk of teen drivers, increasing with each additional passenger. In short \u2013 the more passengers, the greater the risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young drivers and student drivers often carry more passengers than can be safely secured with seatbelts in the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unbelted passengers become projectiles in a road crash, often killing their fellow vehicle occupants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most deaths involving unbelted vehicle occupants occur between midnight and 03:00 \u2013\u00a0also prime time for impaired driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is often a false sense of security that airbags will save lives and prevent injury in a road crash. It needs to be emphasised that \u201cthe back seat is no safer\u201d and that everyone must be buckled in \u2013 front and back seats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drunk-or-impaired-driving\"><strong>Drunk or impaired driving<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol influences a young driver\u2019s performance to a larger extent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students are at particular risk of heavy drinking and the serious consequences thereof, including impaired driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impairment most often results from alcohol and drug use, fatigue and distraction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even though we recommend a zero alcohol intake for drivers, it is important to also educate on the legal limits and the units of alcohol, the absorption of alcohol in the body etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our younger road users who are not consuming alcohol themselves should be advised not to climb in a vehicle with a driver who is impaired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-testing and breathalysing should be encouraged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designated driving services should be promoted as part of informed decision making.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-night-driving-and-driver-fatigue\"><strong>Night driving and driver fatigue<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatigue can set in after a long day at work, studying for an exam, participating in a sports event and many other activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_af5750a1\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/10104\/cf550daaa03d400d974e7050c0ee2935.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/6d8a5de219fa4a6ca58bb49e755fe863.jpg\" title=\"Sleep-related crashes are most common in young people, who tend to stay up late, sleep too little, and drive at night during sleeping hours.\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">Sleep-related crashes are most common in young people, who tend to stay up late, sleep too little, and drive at night during sleeping hours.<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\">Photo: Unsplash\/Amir Benlakhlef<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sleep-related crashes are most common in young people, who tend to stay up late, sleep too little, and drive at night during sleeping hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Road crashes by young drivers occur mostly on Friday and Saturday nights between 21:00 and 06:00.Sleep-related crashes are most common in young people, who tend to stay up late, sleep too little, and drive at night during sleeping hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is estimated that night driving is up to three times more dangerous than driving during the day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If possible, avoid driving through the night or late at night. The best way to prevent driver fatigue is to start a journey well rested.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good, clear visibility is vital, so make sure your windscreen is clean and that your windscreen wipers are used in wet weather. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head and tail lights should be in good working condition with the lenses clean and headlamps properly adjusted to give a good beam ahead without dazzling other road users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slow down when in dimly lit, urban areas and remain alert to the not so visible and impaired pedestrian.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approach and proceed across Intersections with caution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-distracted-driving\"><strong>Distracted driving<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is growing concern of the dangers posed by motorists using cellular phones whilst driving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"InfoBlock\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_778a6db8\">\n<div class=\"heading\">Cellphones a distraction<\/div>\n<div class=\"text\">An international survey amongst 837 drivers with cell phones found that almost half swerved or drifted into another lane, 23% had tailgated, 21% cut someone off and 18% nearly hit another vehicle while using the phone.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students and young road users are too often engaging in social media behind the steering wheel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Best advice is to avoid using cellular phones when driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have to make a call on a hands free cellular phone \u2013 ask a passenger to dial or answer the phone for you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your calls brief.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you expect such a call to last longer than a few seconds \u2013 be on the lookout for a suitable spot to pull over.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never take notes or jot down numbers whilst driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When in heavy traffic rather tell the person you will call back when it is safer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_7f1ffce3\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/10104\/dcc6ceea25354e208a673b9aac4b1561.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/0c8722682b6446ec97dbeb7bf514152c.jpg\" title=\"There is growing concern of the dangers posed by motorists using cellular phones whilst driving.\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">There is growing concern of the dangers posed by motorists using cellular phones whilst driving.<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\">Photo: Unsplash\/Omar-al-Ghosson<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"font-size:1.16em;\">Distracted walking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A diverse set of circumstances and activities result in pedestrians not allocating appropriate attention to their surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These distractions include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cell phone conversations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>text messaging;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>listening to music [i-pod];<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>looking at something other than the direction of travel;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conversations with friends;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>eating; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attempting to find something in a backpack or luggage; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being lost in thought.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Always be alert and watch for traffic<\/strong>. Avoid cell phone use while crossing streets. Do not walk and talk on mobile devices in traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be fully aware of your surroundings <\/strong>\u2013 don\u2019t let music take your attention away from the sound of oncoming vehicles, hooting or sirens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be especially attentive near level crossings<\/strong>.
