{"id":45417,"date":"2024-09-17T14:51:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T12:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/no-safe-time-to-consume-alcohol-during-pregnancy-20240917\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T16:48:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T14:48:59","slug":"no-safe-time-to-consume-alcohol-during-pregnancy-20240917","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/no-safe-time-to-consume-alcohol-during-pregnancy-20240917\/","title":{"rendered":"No \u2018safe time\u2019 to consume alcohol during pregnancy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A condition alarmingly prevalent in South Africa \u2013 the country where the highest rate globally is recorded \u2013 is 100% preventable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a range of serious disorders that result from prenatal alcohol exposure and impacts thousands of individuals across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>September marks FASD Awareness Month, and amongst other things it highlights the importance of a healthy, alcohol-free pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are calling on all South Africans to join us in our efforts to prevent FASD \u2013 to learn what it is, and share this vital information with peers and community, supporting affected communities, and advocating for responsible behaviour,\u201d says Mokebe Thulo, chief executive officer (CEO) of Aware.org. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thulo emphasised that FASD is 100% preventable, yet it continues to affect thousands every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_e0abbf01\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cWhile it is never too late to make better decisions, it is crucial to absorb the truth that any exposure to alcohol during pregnancy can have irreversible effects on the fetus and the growing baby.\u201d <\/div>\n<div class=\"citation\">Mokebe Thulo<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Leana Olivier, CEO of Farr, says FASD is not only a medical issue; it is a community-wide concern that requires a collaborative approach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis FASD Awareness Month we urge everyone to spread the word about the dangers of alcohol use during pregnancy and to support efforts to eliminate FASD,\u201d Olivier says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_f65512e8\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/12217\/e6c9e891e0ba4457be64b656c1f305c6.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/noordkaapbulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/53f648680e854306bd05f87c94c43f17.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/figure><div class=\"slide\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"font-size:1.16em;\">More on FASD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any type of alcohol, at any time during pregnancy, can harm your baby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage women to stop using alcohol if they are planning a pregnancy. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage women to use contraceptives if they are drinking alcohol. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refer women to a professional service provider if they need help to stop drinking. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help women to find alternatives to drinking alcohol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-and-symptoms\"><strong>Signs and symptoms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A person with an FASD might have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>behavioural issues;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hyperactive behaviour;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>difficulty with attention;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>poor reasoning and judgement skills;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning challenges;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>poor memory;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning disabilities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>speech and language delays;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intellectual disability or low IQ;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>difficulty in school; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>physical problems;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low body weight;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>poor coordination;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>problems with the heart, kidneys or bones;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shorter-than-average height;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>vision or hearing problems;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>small head size;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sleep and sucking problems as a baby;
