Posting crime evidence on social media can be dangerous for the following reasons, emphasised Lt. Col Sergio Kock, police spokesperson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suspects may change their behaviour<\/strong>: If suspects know that their vehicle or identity is known, they may change it or somehow make it harder to arrest them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Suspects may target those who post the information<\/strong>: It can place your life in imminent danger if a suspect knows you have evidence of a crime he or she committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The community may take the law into their own hands<\/strong>: Publishing photos of suspects or crime scenes could lead to the community taking matters into their own hands, which could result in injury or death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Information may be unverified<\/strong>: Social media sources can be unverified, making it difficult to confirm the accuracy of the information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Security risks<\/strong>: Social media searches can pose security risks, as investigators may inadvertently reveal their identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The public at large is encouraged to report incidents to the authorities instead of posting it on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Robust community participation in the fight against crime is key.
