A pioneer and activist for the rights of persons with disabilities, Dorothy-Anne Howitson, passed away on the afternoon of Monday, 20 October, two days before her 70th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howitson, who contracted polio when she was a child, was also\u00a0an advocate for\u00a0eradicating polio through\u00a0vaccination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As a polio survivor, I cannot bear to think that anyone should get this preventable virus which changes your life forever,” Howitson used to say. For most of her life, she was dependent on a wheelchair, and a few years ago she was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howitson was an active member of society, serving with organisations including Rotary International, and until recently she was the secretary of the Association of and for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Frances Baard District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Facebook, Sharon Steyn, on behalf of the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nocci), wrote: “Dorothy stood for what she believed in; she fought for the rights of people with disabilities, she gave to people with disabilities and was always thinking of ways to make a difference. A true legend, and a great loss to Kimberley.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William Dickson wrote: “She was a remarkable woman with a strong spirit and a kind heart. She never let her circumstances stop her from inspiring everyone around her. Dorothy touched many lives with her courage, friendliness, and the way she always made people feel welcome and valued. Kimberley has lost a very special person. Rest in peace, Dorothy. Your strength and kindness will never be forgotten.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariana Janse van Vuuren wrote: “Indeed a woman who was a giant in her beliefs and what she did for the community.” Judi Jooste\u00a0added: “She was an amazing person, an inspiration to so many of us.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
