Onlangs laat weet ‘n kli\u00ebnt my dat sy vrou met ‘n aggressiewe soort kanker gediagnoseer is. Hy wil my so gou moontlik sien. Ons kry mekaar by ‘n koffiekroeg, maar hy wys ‘n koppie koffie van die hand.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Ek wil net eers vir mevrou vertel hoe dit by ons gaan,” begin hy die gesprek. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy vertel van die verlammende skok ten aanhoor van die diagnose en die pyn waarin sy vrou verkeer. Ek luister aandagtig. Ons gesels dan vinnig oor skuiwe in hul besigheid. Ons albei talm wanneer ons groet. My brein gryp na die regte woorde, maar tas mis. Ek wil my hand op sy skouer sit en troos, maar dit bly roerloos langs my sy hang. Hy draai om en stap weg.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
‘n Paar dae later is ek in ‘n winkelsentrum en betree die opgaande roltrap met ‘n inkopiesak in elke hand. ‘n Ouer man neem die afgaande roltrap. Ons groet die normale Noord-Kaap-vriendelike-groet. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy begin onverwags met my gesels en noem my op my naam. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Wag, ek kom af,” roep ek agter hom aan toe hy die einde van sy roltrap bereik.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Ek ken nie die dorp nie, die dorp ken my,” skerts ek. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy glimlag en vertel kortliks hier en daar iets van sy lewe. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ons staan en gesels: twee mense wat mekaar van geen kant af ken nie; my kli\u00ebnte-afsprake ‘n oomblik vergete. Ons ruil selfoonnommers uit en groet.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ek betree weer die opgaande roltrap.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nDie gesprek van vroe\u00ebr die week kom by my op. Die grootste deel het nie oor syfers nie, maar oor menswees gegaan. Ek dink aan hierdie vreemdeling wat my spontaan iets van sy lewe vertel.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
