Despite icy conditions and temperatures peaking at just 13\u00b0C, this year’s Northern Cape Bowls<\/a>‘ Open Masters delivered thrilling action at the Sol Plaatje West End Bowling Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, 12 men and 12 women were invited to compete in this prestigious event, braving frost-covered greens in the early mornings, with some of the first ends being played quite literally on ice over the weekend of 5 and 6 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Men\u2019s division: CP Mathewson dominates once again<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In section 1 of the men\u2019s competition, seasoned campaigner CP Mathewson<\/a> made his intentions clear from the outset, winning all his round-robin matches with clinical precision. Trailing behind him were Stephan Enslin and Driaan van Niekerk, who were both in pursuit of the second play-off spot. Stephan eventually edged out Driaan to book his place in the third\/fourth play-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Section 2 saw a showdown brewing between Clint Kneen and Michael Siepker, both undefeated going into their final group match. It was dubbed \u201cthe final before the final\u201d \u2013 and it lived up to the hype. With the scores tied at 18-18 and Clint holding two shots, Michael produced a moment of brilliance with his final bowl of the end, removing both of Clint\u2019s bowls and scoring a three to clinch victory and a place in the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men\u2019s final, however, was a masterclass from Mathewson. He controlled the game from start to finish, showcasing the skill and consistency that have made him a dominant force in Northern Cape Bowls. Michael, despite a valiant effort, could not overcome CP\u2019s experience and accuracy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Still, Michael can walk away with immense pride. Based in Keimoes and representing Upington Bowling Club \u2013 a 50 km journey one way \u2013 he makes the 100 km round trip several times a week to practice and contribute to his club. Over the weekend, he dispatched several top names and earned the respect of all in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bronze medal match between Stephan and Clint was tightly contested, with Stephan ultimately clinching third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women’s division: Malandi Lambrechts lifts trophy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

On the women\u2019s side, Annelie Mathewson topped her section with strong performances, while Adi Koekemoer secured second spot. In the opposite group, Malandi Lambrechts came out on top, with Ren\u00e9 van Niekerk claiming the final play-off position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final between Annelie and Malandi was a nail-biter. The lead changed hands multiple times, with neither player willing to give an inch. Annelie looked poised to claim the title after going 18-16 ahead, but Malandi clawed back to level at 18-18 before scoring three on the next end to take the crown and be named the 2025 Northern Cape Women’s Open Masters Champion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In the third-place play-off, Adi edged out Ren\u00e9 to claim the bronze medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Successful weekend for Northern Cape Bowls<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The success of the tournament is largely due to the dedicated efforts of the Sol Plaatje Bowling Club members, competition secretaries, and volunteers. Their meticulous organisation and hospitality ensured a smooth-running event, despite the frosty conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A heartfelt thank you also goes out to the spectators who braved the cold to support the players and contribute to the spirited atmosphere throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
