LONDON<\/strong> – In the light of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran with the United States having joined the conflict, British Airways has cancelled flights between London’s Heathrow Airport and Dubai and Doha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As a result of recent events, we have adjusted our flight schedule to ensure the safety of our customers and crew,” a BA spokesperson said, confirming that outgoing and incoming flights between Heathrow and Dubai or Doha were cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Dubai was diverted to Zurich on Saturday night, according to the tracking website Flightradar24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BA website showed no flights available for Sunday or Monday when AFP checked for those routes, but flights were still available from Tuesday onward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, General Dan Caine, the top US military officer, explained to journalists in Washington DC exactly how the US strikes took place in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that a powerful US bunker-busting bomb was used in combat for the first time when Washington struck Iranian nuclear sites this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel had carried out a week of airstrikes on Iran, but does not possess the GBU-57 \u2014 a 13 600 kg weapon viewed as necessary to reach the most deeply buried facilities \u2014 or the aircraft needed to deploy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caine told journalists that Washington\u2019s forces dropped 14 of the bombs in the massive operation aimed at knocking out Tehran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are its capabilities?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The US military says the GBU-57 \u2014 also named Massive Ordnance Penetrator \u2014 is designed to penetrate up to 60m underground before exploding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This differs from missiles or bombs that typically detonate their payload near or on impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo defeat these deeply buried targets, these weapons need to be designed with rather thick casings of steel, hardened steel, to sort of punch through these layers of rock,\u201d said Masao Dahlgren, of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based research centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 6.6-metre-long GBU-57 also has a specialised fuze as \u201cyou need an explosive that\u2019s not going to immediately explode under that much shock and pressure,\u201d Dahlgren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caine said on Sunday it was too early to comment on what remains of Iran\u2019s nuclear programme, but that \u201cinitial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is it deployed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The only aircraft capable of deploying the GBU-57 is the B-2 Spirit, a stealth bomber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With their long-range capabilities, B-2s departing from the United States \u201care able to fly all the way to the Middle East to do bombing runs. That\u2019s been done before,\u201d Dahlgren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US employed seven B-2s in the Iran strikes \u2014 aircraft that can fly 9 600 km without refuelling and which are designed to \u201cpenetrate an enemy\u2019s most sophisticated defences and threaten its most valued, and heavily defended, targets,\u201d according to the US military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was the largest B-2 operational strike in US history and the second-longest B-2 mission ever flown,\u201d Caine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several B-2s proceeded west over the Pacific as a decoy while the bombers that would take part in the strikes headed east \u2014 a \u201cdeception effort known only to an extremely small number of planners and key leaders,\u201d the general said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
