MTHATHA Express correspondent Zavela Makwabe has released her first book titled “Oxhel ‘Eyakhe Akabuzwa.”

The isiXhosa drama tells a compelling story of gender-based violence, the disintegration of family, and the fear faced by victims of this scourge.

It also addresses the trauma experienced by children raised in such homes, as well as the complicity of neighbors and family members in keeping a lid on these situations when they are fully aware of them.

Additionally, it explores the issues of irresponsible alcohol use, “pens-down” parties, and other relatable societal issues.

Makwabe, who responded to a call for manuscript submissions to be considered for publication by the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture last year, said that when she started writing her manuscript, she had no idea it would be published.

“I was elated when I found out that my script made it to the province’s top 20. I was just giving it a whirl, and now here we are.”

Publisher Doctor Ncebakazi Saliwa Mogale of NF Saliwa Publishing CC said, “Through her book, Zavela tells a great story. It is powerful and well-written.”
