BLOEMFONTEIN <\/strong>\u2013 \u201cToday\u2019s matric learners need adaptability, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and a strong values foundation to succeed. The world is changing rapidly, and it requires more than academic knowledge \u2013 it calls for leadership, adaptability and the ability to make meaningful decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is according to Thinus de Vries of Forvis Mazars<\/a>, a long-standing sponsor and the official auditors of the Matriculant of the Year competition presented by the University of the Free State (UFS)<\/a> and Novus Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He believes the competition helps develop these skills by challenging young people to articulate their achievements, reflect on their values and understand their role within their communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt creates self-awareness, builds confidence and exposes participants to a higher standard of thinking and conduct, which remains valuable long after matric.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only recognition, but also confidence and broader exposure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two of last year\u2019s finalists, Marn\u00e9 Koen and Amon\u00e9 Verwey, agree participating in the final round gave their self-esteem and confidence a significant boost. Verwey says she learned to think on her feet during the interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe interviews helped me express my thoughts clearly and confidently. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me realise that I have far more potential than I thought,\u201d says Koen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Vries says, \u201cOur involvement aligns directly with Forvis Mazars\u2019 core values of excellence, integrity and people-centred development. We believe in the power of education and leadership as drivers of sustainable growth, and this initiative recognises young people who not only excel academically or in sport, but who also demonstrate character and community involvement. The firm hopes its sponsorship provides finalists with not only recognition, but also confidence and broader exposure at a pivotal stage in their lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I now have a strong support network”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Koen, who matriculated from Ho\u00ebrskool Die Brandwag, and Verwey, a former learner of Ho\u00ebrskool Jim Fouch\u00e9 in Bloemfontein, agree that they formed valuable friendships during the final round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese friendships have enriched my life in a meaningful way and made it easier, as I now have a strong support network of people who motivate me, offer honest advice and encourage me to keep growing,\u201d says Koen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verwey recalls how the finalists laughed together and supported one another throughout the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was able to start this new chapter of my life with peace of mind, knowing I had friends I could rely on and turn to for advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two accounting students say this year\u2019s finalists should simply be themselves and enjoy the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t try to be who you think others expect you to be. Believe in your own abilities. Don\u2019t be afraid to make mistakes; rather see them as valuable opportunities to learn and grow,\u201d advises Koen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s participants should be themselves, enjoy the process and learn more about who they are. I would encourage them to remain true to their values when answering the interview questions,\u201d adds Verwey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to enter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scholarships, prize money and gifts worth approximately R500 000 are up for grabs for the top 25 participants, thanks to sponsors the Kovsie Alumni Trust, Forvis Mazars, Absa and Pick n Pay Preller Walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matric learners from across South Africa who excel in leadership, academics, culture and sport, and who intend studying at the University of the Free State in 2027, are invited to enter the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learners may enter themselves or be nominated by their schools. A total of 25 semifinalists will be selected, after which 14 finalists will take part in the final round in Bloemfontein from 5 to 7 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
