Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr
\nBlade Nzimande, has expressed his sadness at the brutal murder of final year
\nLaw student at the University of Fort Hare in East London, Nosicelo Mtebeni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nzimande passed his heartfelt condolences to her family, friends
\nand the management and fellow students of the University of Fort Hare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI denounce such barbaric and shameful acts committed
\nagainst women, both in our institutions of learning and in society in general.
\nOur society cannot continue harbouring such disgraceful people and criminals,
\nwho are hellbent to tear the moral fibre of our society apart. What is even so saddening
\nis that the suspect would even commit such a gruesome act as we mark and
\ncelebrate Women\u2019s Month,\u201d the Minster said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is alleged that Mtebeni (23) was brutally killed by her
\nboyfriend that has been arrested by the police. \u201cI trust that our criminal
\njustice system will ensure his speedy prosecution,\u201d Nzimande said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mtebeni\u2019s murder came to light when members of SAPS Crime
\nPrevention were patrolling Fitzpatrick Road in East London on Thursday, August
\n19, when they were stopped by a motorist, informing them about a body that was
\nseen in a suitcase at Quigney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to provincial police spokesperson, Brig.
\nTembinkosi Kinana, upon arrival at the corner of Fleet Street and Fitzpatrick
\nRoad, a suitcase with a body was found. Next to it a black bag with more body
\nparts were found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that whilst at the scene, police received
\ninformation that a man, believed to be linked to the murder, was found. He was
\narrested immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn further investigation, which led the police to the
\nhouse where the two lived, a plastic bag with other parts of the body was also
\ndiscovered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Minister said that the Department of Higher Education
\nand Training remains committed to creating a safer and caring post-school
\neducation and training environment, with a concerted focus on safety and
\nprotection of all on campuses, in particular female students and staff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the Department of Higher Education and
\nTraining has mandated HIGHER HEALTH- an entity of the Department of Higher
\nEducation and Training, which is responsible for implementing programmes
\nagainst gender-based violence on university and TVET college campuses \u2013 to work
\ntogether with the University of Fort Hare to provide psychological support to
\nstudents and all affected parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nzimande also thanked the leadership demonstrated by the
\nVice Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, for considering ways to best
\nhonour Mtebeni and for offering emergency trauma debriefing sessions to
\nstudents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am adding my voice to the necessity for societal
\nmobilisation to defeat the scourge of gender-based violence across all sectors
\nof society. I urge all our institutions to vigorously implement the framework
\nfor gender equality as developed by the department and the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy working together, confronting difficult challenges and
\nmobilising everyone in and around our institutions, we shall create a society
\nwhere everyone, especially women, feel safe and are safe at all times and in
\nall places,\u201d Nzimande said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
