Learners at Transkei Primary School (TPS) in Mthatha got introduced to computer coding and robotics for the first time thanks to an initiative of non-profit organisation, Blk Python, which is on a mission to get learners, as young as seven years old, from across the OR Tambo District, to learn basic computer coding and robotics skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coding is defined as written instructions that a robot or computer programme can read and then execute, while robotics allows students to see their thinking in a real way as they go through trial and error until the task is accomplished and the robot\u2019s motions are performed as originally intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blk Python recently spent seven days offering computer coding and robotics lessons to TPS learners, which the school has warmly welcomed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe computer coding and robotics lessons were received with excitement by both learners and staff, as we believe that they will get our learners ahead for when these lessons form part of the school curriculum in the near future,\u201d said TPS science and technology teacher, Nokukhanya Sigwela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She further added that the school was now able to incorporate computer coding and robotics in their curriculum, as it had been their long-held ambition to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The seven-day lessons introduced TPS learners to various aspects of computer coding and robotics including creating apps, games design as well as basic computer skills and website design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is important for children to be introduced to coding at a young age as it improves critical thinking, and data analysis, and makes them to be creative and use their imagination to solve problems through technology,\u2019 added Blk Python coding and robotics instructor, Reatile Mohlaoli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mohlaoli added that anyone can learn computer coding and robotics even without basic computer knowledge if they have the desire to learn and they can use what they learn to sustain themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThrough coding one can design games and game characters that can be sold to a global online audience and make a lot of money,\u201d said Mohlaoli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blk Python offers private lessons, either individually or as a group, at their offices located within the the Mthatha Health Club complex at a cost of R600 for four lessons a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
