Port St John\u2019s Local Municipality has revealed that it has
\nlost R1.6 million through unauthorized and irregular transactions from its
\nmunicipal bank account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was revealed by the municipality\u2019s municipal public
\naccounts committee chairperson Councillor Sivuyile Mavimbela during a media
\nbriefing at the Port St John\u2019s Town Hall
\ntoday, January 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says the money was lost through transfers to credit cards
\nof people not associated with the municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese unauthorized and irregular transactions were
\ndone in tranches of between R50 000 and R100 000 from<\/p>\n\n\n\n
July to December
\n2021. These monies were transferred to credit cards of individuals with no
\nassociation with the municipality,\u201d Mavimbela revealed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said cases had been opened with the police and
\ninvestigations were ongoing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mavimbela says the MPAC has recommended the suspension of
\nthe municipal Chief Financial Officer as an accounting officer on the matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says they will also approach the provincial Department of
\nCooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to conduct a forensic
