An unemployed father of three, Tembisile Taleni (50), has made an impassioned plea to the government and the public at large, to help him with a decent shelter over his head, as he currently lives in a dilapidated mud house that he says can fall on him anytime when there is inclement weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taleni is from Godini location in Ngqeleni, which falls under Ward 24 of the Nyandeni Local Municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He survives through the temporary R350 monthly COVID-19 social relief of distress grant and doing odd jobs within his community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe house I live in was originally a four-roomed house but over the years some of the rooms have fallen and there is only one room left and even that room is full of cracks and my fear is that the house will fall on me one day,\u201d Taleni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taleni lives alone in the house, while his three children live with their mother in another village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has also appealed for help with seedlings so he can start subsistence farming on the garden in his homestead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nyandeni Local Municipality, meanwhile, said it continued to engage the Department of Human Settlements to ensure that the living conditions of its citizens, in relation to housing, were improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA housing-needs analysis was conducted in the entire municipality, with a full report submitted to the Department of Human Settlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFurther to that, as a means of heightening and strengthening our intervention, we earmarked two worst case scenarios per ward as advised by ward councillors for consideration on our low cost two- roomed intervention through the municipality\u2019s indigent support programme,\u201d said municipal spokesperson, Ncebakazi Kolwane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kolwane said their two-roomed intervention programme would be implemented over the long-term, depending on budget availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
