The Mthatha Serious Commercial
\nCrimes Court has convicted and sentenced Bongumusa Sibeko (50) for charges of theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This follows a trail of fraudulent
\nactivities that happened as a result of what was thought to be a faulty
\ncellphone sim card of a complainant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Hawks spokesperson,
\nYolisa Mgolodela, on June 14, 2022, the victim of the fraud noticed her phone
\nto have lost signal and reported the matter to the service provide, MTN, with
\nthe intention to procure a new sim card. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe complainant arrived at a
\nlocal MTN office to be told that the sim card in question is actually active in
\nanother handset. Nevertheless, sim swap was done on her cellphone but there was
\nstill no network,\u201d Mgolodela explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month after the complainant\u2019s
\nloss of network coverage, she went to Standard Bank ATM to withdraw money, only
\nto realise that her balance did not tally with the previous balance she left in
\nher account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe then retrieved the bank
\nstatement and noticed numerous transactions done in her account without her
\nknowledge. The money was transferred to various accounts unknown to her\u201d, Mgolodela said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matter was reported to
\nMthatha Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for further probing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This yielded results as it saw
\nthe arrest of a suspect being arrested on March 10, in Gauteng. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe suspect appeared at the Palm
\nRidge Court on March 10, transferred to Mthatha Serious Commercial Crimes Court
\nand made his appearance on March 14, where he was released on R2000 bail. The
\ncase was remanded to March 31.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigations revealed that
\nthe victim was prejudiced cash to the value of more than R179 000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mgolodela further added that on March 31, 2022, Sibeko pleaded
\nguilty on a count of theft and was convicted and sentenced 4 years direct
\nimprisonment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Provincial Head Major General
\nMboiki Obed Ngwenya once more gave a thumbs up to the team for their laborious
\neffort in fighting Commercial Crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
