The attack on educators from Lusikisiki on May 11, 2022, has
\nleft the MEC for Department of Education in the Eastern Cape, Fundile Gade in
\ntotal shock and disbelief. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the department\u2019s spokesperson, Mali Mtima, an
\nunknown gunman attacked the educators while they were traveling from a Grade 12
\nrevision camp that was held at the school on the evening.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis led to the death of one educator. The deceased
\nwas travelling with colleagues when the gunman opened fire on them when they
\nwere approaching an area where the road had been affected by the recent heavy
\nrains, which necessitated reduction on the speed of the car,\u201d Mtima said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mtima added that an attempt to escape the gunman led to a
\nchase that included a barrage of shots fired, with the educators managing to
\nget away from the assailant and rush the injured to St Elizabeth Hospital to
\nseek medical assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the educators who was injured badly had to be
\ntransferred to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital where he finally succumbed to
\ndeath in the morning of May 12, 2022.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further confirmed that a case has been opened with the
\nSAPS, with psychosocial support been activated by the department for the
\naffected educators and learners. In addition, Mitima indicated Gade\u2019s heartfelt
\ncondolences to the family of the deceased, the school, the community especially
\nthe educators and learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDue to the horrific incident, he will visit the home and
\nschool of the deceased tomorrow where he will be meeting them and updating on
\nthe measures undertaken to ensure safety for all,\u201d Mtima concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
