The High Court of South Africa: Eastern Cape Division,
\nsitting in Ntabankulu has sentenced Sanelisiwe Phiwani (23) to two life
\nimprisonment terms plus 15 years behind bars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was sentenced to life for murder, life for robbery
\nwith aggravating circumstances, 10 years for defeating the ends of justice and
\nfive years for kidnapping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court ordered that the other sentences run
\nconcurrently with the life sentence for murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In September 2020 Phiwani received an \u201corder\u201d from a
\nperson in KwaBhaca wanting to buy a stolen VW Polo. He and his accomplice made
\nplans to rob \u201ceasy targets\u201d around Mount Fletcher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They met the deceased,
\ndriving her black VW Polo, to whom Phiwani proposed love and they exchanged
\ncell phone numbers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On September 13, 2020 Phiwani lured her to Showini
\nLocation, outside town, by pretending to have had a breakdown with his own
\nvehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Upon her arrival on the spot where he was waiting,
\nthey tied her up with a rope, strangled her to death and put her body in the
\nboot of her car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They then drove more than 150 kilometres to KwaBhaca
\nwhere they buried her in a shallow grave near Tina River. While still
\nsearching for the buyer of the vehicle, they were arrested by the police inside
\nthe deceased\u2019s vehicle, still in possession of her bank cards and three
\ncellphones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her body was recovered by police after it was pointed out by
\nPhiwani and his accomplice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Phiwani pleaded not guilty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
State Advocate Nkululeko
\nMzinyati led the evidence of his accomplice, who pleaded guilty and was
\nsentenced to 20 years. The state also called 10 other witnesses to
\nconvince the court. Arguing for the imposition of a life sentence, the
\nprosecutor told the court that Phiwani had abused the trust and kindness of the
\ndeceased, who was willing to help him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Welcoming the sentence, Eastern Cape Director of
\nPublic Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, commended the prosecutor and the police\u2019s
\nswift reaction and investigation of this crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
