The South African
\nNational Taxi Council (SANTACO) confirmed that the taxi industry in
\nthe Eastern Cape would not participate in a national shutdown, allegedly planned for Friday, June 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SANTACO said they did not discuss or agree on such action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSANTACO has never lobbied any organisation for a national shutdown, and not even planning any shutdown,\u201d they said on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a statement issued by SANTACO\u2019s Interim Co-Ordinator, Gabs Mtshala, they confirmed that their operations would run as normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur commuters and our operations would be safe and protected from any forms of disturbance. Furthermore we also call on all those who are implementing fare prices without the involvement of the leadership to refrain from doing that,\u201d said Mtshala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This announcement follows threats of a national shutdown due to the high petrol prices, which is currently trending on social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police in the meantime said they have \u201cput measures in place to ensure the safety and security of South Africans amidst threats of a national shutdown\u201d tomorrow. Police will be on high alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
