Zibokwana Senior Secondary School educator Perm Mramba (36), who died in a car accident while returning from Strelitzia Marking Centre in Kariega to Mount Frere, was described as someone who was dedicated to his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mramba was buried in his home at Qhangqu locality in Mount Frere, recently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the statement from the Department of Education, there were four educators in the vehicle he was travelling in; two were only lightly injured and the third is recovering in hospital. Details around the incident which took place at Mtentu Cuttings between Mthatha and Dutywa on December 22 are unclear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking with mourners, MEC for Education, Fundile Gade, said they were burying one of the young educators who was part of the exam marking team in the province. He said it was not an easy thing to be selected to mark papers for grade 12 learners, but due to his dedication, Mramba was chosen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen you look at his history, he was still new in this field but had shown his dedication. Part of the assignment that we have as the department is to continue to make sure that government is felt by the public. Also, the public feels that they own the government,\u201d said Gade. \u201cWe must always be among the communities whether there is celebration or mourning. This is the reason we are here.\u201d He added that they also have a responsibility of bringing hope to the local communities, as government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sizwe Mqunyana, chairperson for the South African Democratic Teachers\u2019 Union (SADTU) from Gwayi Region in Mount Frere, urged the department to go back to the early dates of marking grade 12 papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the dates such as 22 are one of those days that the roads are very busy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe appeal to you as the leaders of this department to sit down and make changes on this because this is not the first teacher we have lost. We lost another one in Gqeberha in 2021. Why can you not see that the marking period is the one that brings these coffins,\u201d asked Mqunyana. According to him, the school had lost a teacher that would take time to replace. He also described Mramba as one of the teachers who was dedicated in his school work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sibongile Mramba, brother of the deceased, said that they would miss their little brother because he was everything to their family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe was my hope and someone whom I trusted a lot because of his good behaviour. I always contacted him when I wanted to do something at home. What is more painful is that he was also helping the community, and no-one will ever fill his shoes,\u201d said Mramba. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the learners from Zibokwana Senior Secondary School, Zikhona Luvalo (15), said Mramba was teaching her isiXhosa. She said he was not just a teacher, but he was also a parent to his learners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
