{"id":48015,"date":"2023-01-24T10:43:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T08:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/mthathaexpress\/butterworth-police-officers-under-investigation-after-a-weekend-shooting-20230124\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T00:11:28","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T22:11:28","slug":"butterworth-police-officers-under-investigation-after-a-weekend-shooting-20230124","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/mthathaexpress\/butterworth-police-officers-under-investigation-after-a-weekend-shooting-20230124\/","title":{"rendered":"Butterworth police officers under investigation after a weekend shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A shooting incident which occurred over the weekend near Yako Informal Settlement in Butterworth on Sunday, January 22, has immediately been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation by the South African Police Service management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes after information was received about two suspects, believed to be police officials, who were allegedly following information after their cell phones were robbed last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, the suspects, aged 28, allegedly confronted four men who were walking together and fired shots leading to the group running in different directions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two male suspects allegedly proceeded to a local tavern and further to another house where they confronted the owner, asking for their suspects while firing shots in the air and damaging property inside the rooms,\u201d Kinana said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn Monday, January 23, one of the four men who escaped from the shooting was found lying dead in the vicinity. On investigation the police found that he had a bullet wound in the upper body and was certified dead by the paramedics. Cases of murder, malicious injury to property and attempted murder have been registered. No arrests have been made at this stage,\u201d Kinana added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, expressed shock at the incident and said the law must take its course. She further encouraged the police to cooperate with the ongoing investigations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-issued-by-saps\"><strong>ISSUED BY
