THE spokesperson for King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality, Sonwabo Mampoza, confirmed that this municipality is on a mission to fight the high rate of illegal dumping sites in areas around Mthatha. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mampoza said that they conduct awareness campaigns in various wards in urban and suburban areas, so that people are aware of the problem of illegal dumping. He said, so far, the municipality has conducted campaigns in 14 Wards, educating people about the challenges that are caused by this behaviour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIllegal dumping sites are those where the municipality has not placed any containment facilities for refuse, and where illegal signs have been installed. Those people who are found dumping illegally are fined an amount of R2 000 and\/or the impounding of the vehicle,\u201d said Mampoza. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him 28 cases of illegal dumping have been opened since February this year. Fines amounting to R30 000 were imposed. He added that so far no-one has been taken to court yet, but the municipality is ready for any action that may have to be implemented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Mampoza, illegal dumpers cause degradation of the environment, encourage the breeding of vermin, create an offensive smell and pollute surface and ground water, a catalyst to infectious diseases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe municipality is encouraging patriots who love a clean environment to photograph vehicles found dumping illegally, photographing it together with a number plate.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
