The Democratic Alliance Women\u2019s Network (DAWN) in the Eastern Cape has donated a wheelchair to Nomhle Mmiwa (56) of Nqabeni Locality in Bizana, who was struggling to move around after she collapsed and suffered a stroke in September 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DAWN provincial chairperson, Nomvano Zibonda, said that she was alerted of Mmiwa\u2019s plight by the party\u2019s activists in March this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organisation also donated food parcels to the family and further assisted Mmiwa with applying for a disability grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter I was made aware of Mmiwa\u2019s plight I approached an East London-based businessman to assist with donating a wheelchair and he agreed to our request, which culminated in the handover on May 10,\u201d said Zibonda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She further committed that the Democratic Alliance would put pressure on the provincial government to see to it that Mmiwa gets a decent house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mmiwa, her daughter and three grandchildren, currently live in a dilapidated mud house. A temporary shelter they were provided by government is currently not habitable as it leaks water when there is rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs a family we are very happy that my sister finally received a wheelchair as we had to hire a vehicle when she had to go somewhere, at exorbitant prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe fact that she has a wheelchair now means it will be much easier for her to move around and we will not have to hire a vehicle to take her to town when she needs to go there,\u201d said her sister Ntombizodwa Mmiwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
