A joint
\noperation by the Mthatha-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of
\nthe Hawks, together with the South African Post Office (SAPO) as well as the National
\nProsecuting Authority (NPA), has led to the arrest of two suspects, aged 32 and
\n45, on allegations of fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrests
\nwere made yesterday, June 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two suspects
\nare former employees of South African Post Office based in Butterworth who
\nworked as tellers, where they were responsible for making South African Social
\nSecurity Agency (SASSA) payments at Cash Pay Points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDuring the
\nperiod between September 2020 and April 2022, both suspects allegedly colluded
\nin common purpose to unlawfully and intentionally flout social grant payment
\nprocedure and diverted the transections into their pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is
\nfurther alleged that the suspects prejudiced SASSA an amount of over R4.1
\nmillion for their personal benefit. The matter was then reported to the Mthatha-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation of the Hawks for probing, which
\nresulted in their arrest,\u201d said Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe
\nMhlakuvana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspects
\nwere due to make their first appearance at Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crime
\nCourt today, June 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe provincial
\nHawks head, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, once more applauded all role
\nplayers involved for the successful joint operation and for the excellent job
\nin eradicating criminal elements by rooting out those stealing from the poor,\u201d
\nconcluded Mhlakuvana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
