While Grade 12 learners from other Senior Secondary Schools in the Eastern Cape were writing their last exam papers for trial exams, learners from Elliotdale district could not write, due to taxi drivers who shut down the offices of the Education Department, demanding payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The learners, from eight schools, did not write their history second paper on Wednesday and the English paper on Friday, last week. According to one of these service providers, Ntsika Tupa, they turned away school principals who went to fetch question papers in the Elliotdale district office. He said that they closed the offices of this department and took the keys from a driver who was driving a department bakkie, transporting chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were asked by the department to transport learners from Elliotdale to Dutywa to participate in a music competition on May 9 and 10, 2023. The learners were from Ngangolwandle Senior Secondary School, Ganizulu Senior Secondary School, Qotongo Primary School, Lubanzi Primary School, Melibhuwa Primary School and Mkhathazo Primary School. We catered for them using our money from our own pockets, as per the agreement we made with the department. As from that time until now, we never received our money. We held so many meetings with them, but nothing happened.

Tupa said even though they had transported two senior secondary schools, they made sure that all the high schools in this district were affected by their action, including those who were not taking part in this competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tupa confirmed that he is one of the service providers who sent invoices, but he was only paid for one invoice, even though he sent four. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chairperson for Zwelenqaba Senior Secondary School, Sabelo Fanayo, said that it was painful because their children did not finish their trial exams, due to this problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is more painful is that our school was not even participating in music. We do not understand why our principal was not allowed to get question papers. The department must do what is right, and pay the service providers once and for all,\u201d said Fanayo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, confirmed that police were called to an incident where taxi drivers allegedly closed one of the buildings housing the Department of Education in Elliotdale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is alleged that they were demanding to be paid for the services they rendered. On police arrival, they did not find the taxi drivers, and the building was open,\u201d said Nkohli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mali Mtima, said they are aware of the matter and are weighing two options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first one is to allow these learners to write the school-based assessment after having followed all the protocols of the department. The second is to work with the schools and check the average, to determine the amount of marks that should be given to the learners, but we are weighing all those with the National Department to ensure the future of the learners is not compromised. We will pay them this week as they are on the group to be paid. Despite that we are appealing on them to desist from closing schools as it is against the law to bar learners from going to class. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
