AS the Summer Fire Season approaches, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment\u2019s Working on Fire Programme in the Eastern Cape has intensified its preparations for the fire season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The annual Yellow Card Training Assessment camp took place in Witelsbos, focusing on teams in the western part of the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This vital training began on October 2 and concluded on October 14, involving nearly 204 dedicated firefighters from 14 different bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Divided into groups, these teams have been rigorously trained and assessed, to ensure that they are fully prepared for the season. The Yellow Card assessment marks one of the final stages in their preparation for a season expected to begin on December 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The primary objective of this assessment is to ascertain that all participants are not only physically fit, but also mentally and theoretically prepared for the upcoming challenges. The training comprises a series of evaluations, including a fitness assessment involving a 2.4 kilometre run, sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups. Furthermore, firefighters\u2019 theoretical knowledge of fire theories, various processes, and standard operating procedures is tested through written examinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to theoretical knowledge, firefighters are evaluated on their practical abilities in various firefighting techniques, such as constructing firebreaks and construction lines which are essential for effectively managing and controlling wildfires. The assessment culminates with a 10-kilometre route march, evaluating the endurance and physical strength required to work long hours on the fireline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Teams that have already completed the training include those from Port Alfred, Addo, Longmore, Sarah Baartman, Lottering, Humansdorp, St Francis, Baviaanskloof West, and Baviaanskloof East. As the Summer Fire Season fast approaches and climate change intensifies the frequency of veld and forest fires, these dedicated firefighters are ready to tackle nature\u2019s challenges. Their commitment and preparedness ensure the safety of both the environment and the communities they serve. With Yellow Card Training and other preparatory measures in place, the Eastern Cape is poised to effectively respond to, and manage, wildfires during the upcoming summer season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
