Recently, 300 teachers from 100 schools in the OR Tambo District in the Eastern Cape were trained in tangible coding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training, which is a partnership between Tangible Africa, the Eastern Cape Department of Education and teachers\u2019 union SAOU, has been taking place in Tsolo and Mthatha and will end off in Qumbu and Mqanduli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tangible Africa is a partnership between Nelson Mandela University and the Leva Foundation, with a footprint across Africa, while it is now also making inroads in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Department of Education Coding and Robotics District Coordinator, Phindile Mjamba, said that the OR Tambo District had a vision of becoming the Coding and Robotics hub of the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe found it worthwhile to work with Tangible Africa as it improved the standard of coding in our district. Previously we were focussing on plugged coding only. Tangible coding helps schools to start coding, even without having to worry about the availability of computers. At the rate we are working together, there is no way we can stop this partnership any time soon,\u201d said Mjamba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tangible Africa Project Coordinator, Lizwi Gwaza, reported that the first workshops of the week went well, with teachers showing great enthusiasm and excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis enthusiasm reflects the teachers\u2019 belief in the value of the skills they are learning and their desire to improve their classroom teaching methods. It\u2019s wonderful to see the positive impact that the workshops have on both the teachers and the learners. The project is having a real impact on rural communities, helping to close the digital divide, and providing new educational opportunities for all involved,\u201d said Gwaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tangible Africa Founder and Nelson Mandela University Head of the Department of Computing Sciences, Prof Jean Greyling, said this week\u2019s training comes on the back of previous partnerships with the Department of Education and teachers\u2019 unions, SADTU and SAOU, in the most rural parts of the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one of the poorest provinces in the country, there is a grave danger that thousands of learners are excluded from the benefits of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our unplugged and tangible coding project aims to reach those learners, therefore training teachers is a high priority for Tangible Africa.<\/div>\n

The SADTU training in Mthatha and Butterworth focused on tactile coding, for learners with visual impairment and other special needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Skills Programme Coordinator, Lusanda Maqungo, from We Code Everywhere in Tsomo, was involved in some of the Tangible Coding training that took place earlier this year with schools from the Chris Hani East and Amathole Districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe unplugged activities help to build a solid foundation of understanding, which makes it easier to transition to a programming language like Scratch. Unplugged coding skills manifested in front of our own eyes in the district. We witnessed learners taking the skills they have gained and applying them in real-world scenarios,\u201d said Maqungo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the learners\u2019 enthusiasm for the new skills they acquired and the sense of empowerment was infectious, the teachers also had very positive reactions to the coding workshops. \u201cThey often feel the sense of accomplishment after completing the workshops, and they enjoy the hands-on collaboration. Many teachers commented that the workshops have helped them to become more creative and innovative in their teaching,\u201d said Maqungo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greyling said the scale of tactile coding training was thanks to solid partnerships in the regions, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year we trained over 1 000 learners in the rural Eastern Cape because of partnerships with unions, local companies and other entities. We hope to have a much bigger footprint next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
