MEMBER of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services in the OR Tambo District Municipality, Councillor Nontyatyambo Gcingca, handed over cleaning equipment and machinery to the Port St Johns Local Municipality during its annual clean-up campaign, held in Port St Johns last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This comes after the municipality finished first in the district in the Greenest Municipality Competition, and second in the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gcingca emphasised her commitment and dedication to actively participating in initiatives that promote a clean and healthy environment for residents of this town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI also want other towns to pull up their socks and participate in the Greenest Competition, because the more they participate the more our towns can become clean,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dyantyi handed over cleaning equipment, which included five grass cutters, gloves, refuse collection canvases, black refuse bags and nylon strings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the event various departments also created awareness about the dangers of the mismanagement of waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The senior manager of Port St Johns Local Municipality Community Services, Councillor Eric Mzayiya, said that residents should understand that if they dump garbage everywhere they are not only endangering lives, but also the lives of people around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe rain may come and flow with the garbage to the rivers and the sea; the fish in that space will be killed or get diseases; people who fish it will be infected and animals who rely on that water to drink will also be infected,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that this emphasises the importance of environmental conservation, and the need to address issues that threaten the well-being of residents and communities. -ISSUED BY
