MEMBERS of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) launched the festive season\u2019s anti-drunk driving awareness campaign at Misty Mount in Libode last week. To ensure the campaign\u2019s success, they collaborated with traffic officers and police personnel from Nyandeni Local Municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Nombuyiselo Makala, Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, stated that this campaign mirrors last year\u2019s efforts, with the key focus on educating the public during the festive season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPeople must be aware that drinking and driving is not permissible,\u201d Makala emphasised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPedestrians should also avoid consuming alcohol and walking on roads, as it endangers their lives. As ECLB, we are concerned about these incidents due to our role in issuing liquor licences. Our responsibility is to educate the public that the consumption of alcohol is not the issue; the problem arises with irresponsible behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Makala reiterated that drinking and driving are strictly prohibited as they endanger others. This year, they continue to teach individuals until they fully comprehend the expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe organise initiatives against underage drinking, visiting schools and employing our Ambassador Programme. This scheme involves partnering with 108 schools this year, training students to educate peers about the repercussions of underage drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This initiative has also assisted in curbing \u201cpen\u2019s down\u201d celebrations, as Ambassadors inform authorities about potential gatherings. Without this programme, many unsanctioned celebrations could have occurred in the province. Students now opt for hosting these parties at B&Bs or Guest Houses, misrepresenting their intentions to the owners, who are surprised to learn about the true nature of these gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Viwe Ndamase, Mayor of Nyandeni Local Municipality, remarked that the Arrive Alive Awareness Campaign focuses on reiterating road safety measures until drivers adhere to them. \u201cWe\u2019ve arrested individuals with expired driver\u2019s licences. This highlights the need for ongoing awareness efforts even if no offences are found. This campaign serves to remind drivers of road safety rules during the festive season,\u201d Ndamase added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further noted that police visibility on roads affects driver behaviour, urging drivers traversing long distances to start their journeys early, enabling them to drive calmly and safely. \u201cAdhering to road regulations is crucial.
