MANAGEMENT from African Bank has taken steps to improve the quality of education in the Eastern Cape by hosting a Back-to-School event at Lower Ndakana Primary School in Ngqamakhwe last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This initiative was led by Group Chief Transformation & Sustainability Officer, Edna Sathekga-Montse, and Group Chief People Officer, Gcobisa Ntshona, both from African Bank. Sathekga-Montse stated that this initiative is part of the bank\u2019s Whole School Development Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event marked the official handover of newly upgraded school facilities designed to enhance the learning environment, along with the distribution of essential school supplies to ensure learners are fully prepared for the year ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She mentioned that the African Bank has been a leader in impactful corporate social responsibility, particularly in transforming South African schools since March 2022. This collaboration has implemented the Whole School Development model at six schools across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, with Lower Ndakana Primary School as a key beneficiary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSignificant improvements included the renovation of six classrooms and a Grade R facility, upgrades to the principal\u2019s office and staff room, and the conversion of the school\u2019s borehole to solar power for a reliable water supply. Additionally, the bank donated school uniforms, stationery, and backpacks to 145 learners, enhancing their educational experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe partnership also prioritised local economic empowerment, creating 34 temporary jobs for community members and supporting five Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) through procurement. These initiatives not only improve access to quality education but also contribute to poverty reduction and local business growth, showcasing African Bank\u2019s holistic approach to making a lasting impact in the educational landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school\u2019s principal, Mkanyisi Mayila, said they had made several attempts to seek assistance from the Department of Education, but their requests were unsuccessful. He explained that the school had been in a dilapidated state, with leaking roofs. However, thanks to African Bank\u2019s intervention, the school has been completely transformed, attracting more learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt the beginning of every year, we would send requests to the Department of Education, but nothing was done. We don\u2019t know whether their plan was to close the school or not because they never gave us any answers. Besides renovating the school, the bank has also donated uniforms and other essential items, giving our learners renewed hope,\u201d said Principal Mayila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the school was also provided with solar power, ensuring continuous functioning even during power outages. He confirmed that parents and members of the School Governing Body (SGB) are committed to maintaining the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEven during school holidays, they ensure that our school remains in good condition and that no one vandalises anything. We can assure you that this solar system will not be stolen. Even the learners are playing a major role in ensuring that the school remains in excellent condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayila said they would request security from the Department of Education, although they understand that it may take time to receive assistance. \u201cWe thank African Bank for helping build the future of the African child. This is very important, and our children will now be safe in their classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
School Governing Body (SGB) member, Nontando Mavi, urged parents to bring their children back to the school now that it is in good condition. \u201cWe are very happy about what the bank has done for our school, and we will ensure that we take care of everything they have given us. We will hold a meeting with the principal to draft a letter to the school inspector, requesting security,\u201d said Mavi. She confirmed that, in the meantime, those living close to the school would monitor the premises to prevent vandalism or theft of the solar system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
